Reality stars from Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race, and Love Island are bringing their talents to The Challenge: the USA, a new spin-off of the original competition series franchise, and now it’s time to meet the 28 competitors who are donning the Under Armour jerseys for a chance to win half a million dollars.
The whole cast list was released on Wednesday, and it features a slew of CBS reality stars. Tyson Apostol, Ben Driebergen, and Sarah Lacina won Survivor; Xavier Prather won Big Brother; James Wallington won The Amazing Race, and Justine Ndiba won Love Island. It’s already a veritable all-star cast.
The Challenge: the USA, hosted by T.J. Lavin and shot in Buenos Aires, will begin with each contender receiving $1,000 in their challenge accounts. They must fight to maintain and raise their prize money throughout the season by winning challenges or eliminations (in which they steal all of their opponents’ money).
However, to add to the confusion, an algorithm will join competitors for each task at random, making alliances and plans more difficult to manage than ever before. By the end of the season, only one male and one female will be crowned Challenge champions, receiving $500,000 and qualifying for The Challenge: Global Championship (working title), the future Paramount+ competition.
Before we get too deep down the rabbit hole of talking about the cast, there are a few things that have shocked us. Take, for example, CBS’ casting of so many Love Island contestants even though the show will not be renewed (it will be moved to Peacock).
Also, why aren’t there any members of Tough as Nails on this list? Some of them seem like they’d be worthy contenders. It would have been lovely to have a handful of competitors from previous Big Brother / Survivor seasons, but recency bias won out in this case.
The ability to witness so many different competitors all get a chance to take on the gauntlet of this show, and to see a lot of Big Brother / Survivor folks face-off, is probably what we’re most thrilled about right now as viewers. There are a lot of bragging rights on the line here, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens!
