Why not have another discussion about Jesse Spencer as we begin to look forward with Chicago Fire season 11? This time, it’s worth thinking about whether or not we’ll see the character again.
On paper, Spencer’s return to the program appears to be a possibility. The actor has expressed a desire to return on occasion, but it will almost certainly have to be for a reason. It won’t be a haphazard appearance with no larger importance. For starters, Casey would have to return from Oregon to make it happen, which is a long trip! In addition, the most important reason for him to return has already occurred: Severide and Stella’s wedding.
So, how do Casey and Brett fare? Isn’t he going to come back to visit her? On paper, the answer appears to be yet, but the reality may be a little more nuanced. At the conclusion of Season 10, Casey and Brett both seemed to realize that their relationship might not be able to thrive if they lived apart. We believe they love each other, but their priorities are very different. Sylvie does not want to leave Chicago, and he is unable to leave Oregon for an extended amount of time at this moment. We wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t together in season 11, or if they are, that they communicate over the phone or meet up off-screen.
While it was wonderful to see Jesse Spencer return in the season 10 finale, there are no plans for Spencer to reprise his role as Casey in season 11. Casey appears to be extremely content with the life he’s built for himself in Oregon, according to the writers.
Although the authors were able to bring Spencer back for the finale, it looks that this will be a one-time cameo, as the intention is for Casey to return to Oregon and continue to keep an eye on the Darden boys while working at a nearby fire station.
If the authors had intended for Casey to return in a regular capacity in season 11, we doubt they would have given Brettsey that surprise. After all, why bring Casey home just to break up the couple after they spent so much time doing long-distance work?
Spencer could return as Casey for another guest appearance in season 11, but there are currently no plans for him just to return as a series regular in season 11. Finally, we don’t believe another Jesse Spencer engagement is on the horizon. We believe we’ll see him maybe at some point, but it’s difficult to put a time frame on it. A little patience will go a long way in this situation!
“When he departed this season, he made a three-year commitment,” Haas reiterated. “He’s not going back to 51 for good any time soon.” While Spencer’s reappearance may be fleeting, it’s reassuring to know that he’s still in the mix, willing to assist in a way that Casey doesn’t go too far. We’re looking forward to seeing him again.
