James Mcavoy is Back in the Lead Role in the Ensemble Cast of “the Sandman: Act Ii,” With an Audible Premiere Date Set.

In Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman: Act II” audio drama, which will debut exclusively on Audible this fall, James McAvoy will reprise his role as Morpheus.

The best-selling comic novel series by Gaiman and DC will continue to be adapted for audiobooks by Audible. The release date for “The Sandman: Act II” on Audible is set for September 22, 2021. After releasing the first episode a year ago, Amazon-owned Audible revealed earlier this year that it had ordered seasons 2 and 3 of “The Sandman.”

Starting today, Audible will make the first chapter of “The Sandman” free to download before the release of part 2. The series was previously only accessible through Audible Premium Plus ($14.95/month) or as an individual purchase for $34.95.

Dirk Maggs will adapt and direct “The Sandman: Act II” once more, with Neil Gaiman narrating and serving as creative director and co-executive producer. James Hannigan, a BAFTA-winning composer, again provides the original score.

The ensemble cast will be led by McAvoy, who will reprise his title role as Dream (also known as Morpheus), along with Kat Dennings as Death, Michael Sheen as Lucifer, and Andy Serkis as Matthew the Raven.

McAvoy wrote on Instagram that he was “thrilled to be among the wonderful cast of The Sandman: Act II from @audible and @dc, based on the acclaimed comic novels created by @neilgaiman.”

For season 2, there are both new and recurring cast members, including Jeffrey Wright (Destiny), Regé-Jean Page (Orpheus), Brian Cox (Augustus), Emma Corrin (Thessaly), John Lithgow (Emperor Joshua Norton), David Tennant (Loki), Bill Nighy (Odin), Kristen Schaal (Delirium), Kevin Smith (Merv Pumpkinhead), Bebe Neuwirth (Bast), Miriam (William Shakespeare).

Volumes Four: Season of Mists and Volume Five: A Game of You from the Gaiman graphic book series, as well as the “Distant Mirrors” quartet and the “Convergence” trio from Volume Six: Fables & Reflections, will all be adapted for “The Sandman: Act II.”

From July 22 to October 22, the first chapter of “The Sandman” will be freely downloadable or streamable from Audible in the United States. Alexa-enabled devices will have access to all episodes from August 3 through August 31 (by saying “Alexa, read “The Sandman”), while episodes 1-3 of the first season will be available on Amazon Music for free from July 22 through October 22.

The top slot on the New York Times Best Seller Audio Fiction list in July and August 2020 was held by “The Sandman,” the best-selling original product in Audible’s history.

Separately, Warner Bros. Television is developing a “Sandman” TV series for Netflix.

Along with “Killing Hollywood: The Cotton Club Murder,” starring Christian Slater, Juliette Lewis, and Rainn Wilson; “Panic: Ghosts and Legends,” by Lauren Oliver; “Yard Work,” written by David Koepp and starring Kevin Bacon; “Phreaks,” starring Christian Slater and Ben McKenzie; and “When You Finish Saving the World,” written and performed by Jesse Eisenberg, among others, “The Sandman: Act II”.
