James Gunn and John Cena posed a simple question to DCEU fans in 2021: “Do you really want to?” “Are you sure you want to try it?” Peacemaker, an HBO Max TV spin-off starring the same-named character from The Suicide Squad, was the “thing” in question, and the answer was yes. People were eager to try it.
On their way out, Peacemaker‘s squad escaped a whole catastrophe, slaughtered the cow, and yelled at a few superheroes. Peacemaker has been officially renewed for a second season, which means he’ll get another chance to hurl expletives.
Peacemaker was a commercial and critical success, with more and more viewers coming in each week to see Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker (Cena), and his team attempt to save the planet from a parasitic mind-controlling butterfly invasion. It’s no surprise that Warner Bros executives were eager to renew this popular TV show for a second season.
But what does the future hold for Peacemaker and Vigilante (Adrian Chase) as costumed psychopaths? What does Adebayo’s (Danielle Brooks) choice to inform the world about Task Force X mean for the crew and Harcourt (Jennifer Holland)? Will Steve Agee’s John Economos gain the confidence to stop dyeing his beard? If you have any questions, we can answer them. Here’s what we know about the release date for Peacemaker season 2.
Release date rumors for Peacemaker season 2
We have both good and bad news. The good news is that Season 2 of Peacemaker is on the way. It was confirmed by Gunn himself. The bad news is that we have no idea when Team Peacemaker will return to television.
Gunn is now working on the third installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Gunn will apparently direct and write all seven episodes of the upcoming season, so it’s not all terrible news.
“Working on Peacemaker with John Cena and the fantastic creative team around me, as well as our friends at HBO Max, has been one of the genuine highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise,” Gunn said in a statement following the announcement.
“Having something we all adore being adored by the audience has been a tremendous experience.” I’m excited for Season 2 to see where Team Peacemaker goes.”

Season two of Peacemaker has been on the cards since it began breaking viewing records on HBO Max, its streaming home. The show’s popularity grew week after week because to the winning mix of John Cena, James Gunn, and Eagly, a CGI eagle.

He took this character, played by the incomparable John Cena, and turned it into an exciting, amusing, and poignant series that reveals the humanity underlying this band of misfits living in a superhuman world.

“I am tremendously thrilled and humbled by the response to Peacemaker and the experience of playing this role,” John Cena said of the show’s success.
The follow-up season will premiere in February 2022, according to Deadline, with James Gunn issuing a statement to celebrate the occasion.
Season 2 plot rumor for Peacemaker
We have no idea, because Gunn is writing these new episodes. We couldn’t have guessed that season 1 would end with extraterrestrial butterflies taking over the planet, so we won’t try to guess where Gunn will take things.
However, there are a few loose narrative strands from the first season. The first is Peacemaker’s sorrow over the death of his father, Auggie, despite the cruelty he inflicted on Chris and his brother.
Where does Team Peacemaker stand after Season 1?
At the very least, we know that Leota (Danielle Brooks) and Chris are “BFFs” (sorry, Vigilante). Chris is feeding Goff the butterfly and remembering his father, who is no longer alive (more on that later). Although devastated about the loss of his butterfly allies, Judomaster (Nhut Lee) lives to fight another day. Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) has vanished — as both a butterfly and a human, it appears — leaving the crew to figure out who the next opponent is.
Harcourt is recovering from her struggle with the butterflies, and she and Chris are sharing a sweet moment at her hospital bedside. Jennifer Holland tells Polygon that she wasn’t sure how Harcourt felt about herself at the time, but seeing Chris at her bedside certainly wore down her walls.

Peacemaker hallucinates his father berating him in the last episode, forcing the already insane hero to act even more aggressively. This is a possibility, if not a foregone conclusion, in Season 2.
There’s also the fallout from Adebayo’s choice to tell the world about what’s going on at Belle Reve. Amanda Waller is likely to be shamed now that the Suicide Squad plot has been discovered. Will Waller go after the team that wrecked her reputation? The fact that she was revealed by her own daughter may lessen her need for vengeance, but you never know with Waller.
So, what can we expect from Peacemaker season 2 and its offshoot show?
Of course, Gunn is staying quiet about the entire details of both the Peacemaker season 2 plan and the second Suicide Squad spinoff in the works at HBO Max.
“I’m at a loss for words.” “It’s tied to this universe, and I don’t think it’ll be in the same genre as Peacemaker, and it won’t be as much of a comedy as Peacemaker,” Gunn told Deadline.
It’s evident from what he’s said that he wants to use Peacemaker to continue fleshing out Chris Smith’s emotional depth. In the end, he chooses to stand with the Butterfly aliens rather than betray his buddies. He also stays at the hospital for days to ensure Harcourt is okay.
John Cena, who plays the main character, wasn’t always signed up for a second season.
“We didn’t agree to a second season right away because we wanted to make sure this is something we genuinely love and desire,” James Gunn explained (via Variety). “That’s why it’s only now being disclosed; we had to figure everything out.” I didn’t agree to a second season right away; it wasn’t like, “OK, we’ve been picked up.” It’s just that I wanted to be sure it was something I genuinely wanted to do.”
It’s fortunate that John and James were able to sneak into the follow-up because it would have been impossible to complete without them.
Season 2 cast speculation for Peacemaker
Gunn has yet to confirm which cast members will be returning. Gunn’s tweet announcing Peacemaker season 2 does, however, include all of the surviving members of Task Force X from the first season. We can reasonably guess who will be in the cast:
Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, is played by John Cena.
Adrian Chase, called Vigilante, is played by Freddie Stroma.
Leota Adebayo is played by Danielle Brooks.
John Economos is played by Steve Agee.
Emilia Harcourt is played by Jennifer Holland.
August ‘Auggie’ Smith will very certainly be played by Robert Patrick again. While Auggie died after Peacemaker shot him in the head, the season finale revealed that Chris is still plagued by his father, with him hallucinating that he was sitting next to him in the closing minutes of the show.
Will there be more DCEU cameos in Season 2 of Peacemaker?
In a nutshell, sure. Gunn told GamesRadar that he has plenty more cameos planned, including the Justice League’s visit at the end of season one, though he can’t guarantee it will be the League every time.

“As we move forward with Peacemaker and other HBO Max projects, I think we’ll see more linkages in other things.” “Those [cameos] will continue to come,” Gunn says. “I’m not sure if the Justice League will appear in every season of Peacemaker; it could be a one-off.” We’ll see!”
If we were to pick someone from the DCEU to appear in Season 2, it would be Peacemaker’s old pal Bloodsport. We’re sure those two could use some conversation.
Is there a trailer for the second season of Peacemaker?
Sorry, the second season of Peacemaker has yet to begin filming, so your odds of seeing it anytime soon are about as slim as seeing Wonder Woman’s invisible plane, i.e. not very probable.

In the character’s mid-’80s relaunch, Christopher Smith claimed that his father’s spirit (together with the ghosts of those he killed) collected inside his helmet and chastised him. Given that Peacemaker shoots a poison dart at a hallucination of his father in the season 1 finale, only to discover a lost helmet buried beneath the leaves, it appears like Robert Patrick will get to play Peacemaker’s father in season 2.
