Azurexis, the Paper Animal RPG’s creator, speaks with Game Rant about the game’s development, mechanics, and Kickstarter campaign.
A adorable and cosy roguelike RPG, Paper Animal RPG allows you to battle moderately ominous foes in a real-time tile-based battle system while exploring a vibrant landscape that attempts to mimic a papery-board game aesthetic. Campsites are scattered around the dungeon floors, where you can keep track of your squad and supplies.
The debut project of Cuddling Raccoon Studios’ lone developer Azurexis is a role-playing game called Paper Animal RPG. The genre-defying game, which combines comfortable comfort gaming with roguelike challenges, finished its Kickstarter campaign successfully early yesterday, raising almost twice as much money as it had hoped to. Because of its resemblance to previous games and several in-jokes, fans of Nintendo’s different Mario RPG series, such as Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, may wish to check out Paper Animal RPG.
Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon have all been named as influences in the PARPG Steam description. These games provided PARPG with a wealth of inspiration and lessons, from grand ideas to minute minutiae.
The most blatant example of this is the pixel art and Paper Mario aesthetic fusion in the flat characters and objects. Like in The Thousand-Year Door, there is a small audience at the bottom that applauds you when you succeed. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon served as a major inspiration for the exploration aspect. To make their sprites appear less crisp and blocky, Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga uses a fairly specific Anti-Aliasing technology, which has also been mimicked in the sprites of Paper Animal RPG.
Additionally, the game is designed to start with just one character, and as you progress, you can add more players to your party until it reaches four. Seven characters are currently available, one of which has five possible forms. The three main characters, Peep, Shelp, and Kwak, are your choices when you launch the game for the first time.
Numerous consumable items are also mentioned in the Steam listing, along with the fact that players can combine them after snatching a cooking pot from adversaries. Different cuisine creations are possible for gamers! The players are invited to experiment with the results of mixing various objects together. The cooking system also has a few simple rules, but after a few attempts, you should quickly get familiar with them.
According to Nick, the creator of Paper Animal RPG, The Elder Tree region is a hidden location in the Paper Animal RPG that can only be accessed online. This enormous bright tree has an altar in front of it.
When you approach the altar, you can use your experience points to donate a gift that will appear in a different player’s world along with your name and a brief note. In exchange, more presents from other players with potentially useful items may appear during your runs the more presents you donate. Without being specifically multiplayer, it includes a social interaction element and is essentially designed for people to help one other out in a friendly way.
