Heard’s decision to award Johnny Depp the $1 million defamation lawsuit payout was referred to as a “PR win,” in the words of civil and criminal attorney Tim Parlatore. After the former couple’s six-week defamation trial concluded in June with Depp’s victory, Heard decided not to pursue her appeal.

A Virginia judge awarded Johnny Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive penalties. Due to the state’s statutory maximum on punitive damages, this was lowered to $350,000. Only $2 million in damages were awarded in Amber Heard’s countersuit against Depp by the jury. The $1 million payment is going to be covered by one of Heard’s insurance plans. According to civil and criminal lawyer Tim Parlatore, the settlement “enshrines” Depp’s success in the lawsuit.
Parlatore claims that “this enshrines his triumph. She is ensuring his success. Additionally, the attorney commented on the “Aquaman” actress’ Instagram post, in which she stated that she “defended my truth” and made it plain that, while choosing to withdraw her appeal, she “made no admission.” She continued by saying that the agreement does not restrict her ability to talk openly about the circumstance or her allegations of abuse against Depp.
Another strike against Amber Heard!
According to Tim Parlatore, Johnny Depp “would win because he already has a finding” if Amber Heard published another op-ed containing the identical statements that the jury found to be defamatory. While “everything is couched in terms of ‘I stated my truth in court,’ she doesn’t openly say he did this to me or that,” the attorney told the site. Fox News said that Todd Spodek, a New York attorney, commended Depp and said the payment was a kind gesture on his behalf.
The settlement was seen as “Depp’s extraordinarily brilliant PR maneuver” by Los Angeles-based Reputation Management Consultants chairman Eric Schiffer. According to him, it “shows compassion and prevents Amber from maybe having to file for bankruptcy with a small child with him having been the reason,” he said in an interview with Fox News.
In an effort to prove his innocence, Depp previously sued The Sun in the U.K. High Court for an article calling him a “wife abuser.” However, he was unsuccessful in his legal battle because the judge deemed the newspaper’s statements to be “basically truthful.”
