Murder Case
Before the murder, Gilbert had been in and out of mental health facilities and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Sarra Gilbert, of Ellenville, New York, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison on Wednesday for the murder of her mother, Mari Gilbert.
Gilbert, who was 26 at the time of the crime, bludgeoned her mother to death with a hammer in 2016. During her sentencing, Gilbert tearfully apologized to her family for taking Mari’s life.
“I’m so sorry for what I did,” she said. “I know it can’t bring her back.” “We do not believe that Sarra is a danger to society,” Shannon said. “We believe she is a good person who made a bad decision.”
The judge ultimately decided to hand down the maximum sentence, saying that Gilbert had shown “no remorse” for her actions.

Sarra Gilbert, age 27, is currently serving a sentence of 25 years to life in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder in the death of her former partner, Mari Gilbert.
Mari Gilbert was found dead in her Ellenville, New York home on July 23, 2016, and Sarra was arrested and charged with the crime the following day. Sarra’s trial began on October 30, 2017, and she was eventually found guilty of murder in the second degree on November 17.
At the sentencing hearing on January 19, 2018, Sarra was given the maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
