Kanye West was denied an honorary degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as a result of his contentious comments towards the Jewish and black communities. SAIC president Elissa Tenny allegedly said in a letter that the rapper had “exhibited unsettling actions and made harmful remarks that are not in keeping with our community values” on Thursday.

Chicago-born West graduated with a Ph.D. from the university in 2015. He left Chicago State University and the American Academy of Art at age 20 to focus on a music career.
Tenny said that the exclusive art school, which granted West an honorary doctorate, bestows honorary degrees on individuals who, in their time, have made great contributions to “art and culture.” However, the 45-year-current old’s behavior is inconsistent with SAIC’s purpose and principles. The university decided to remove the Grammy winner’s degree after a meeting with the Board of Governors. In the 80-year history of the institution, this is the first time a degree has been revoked, according to sources.
