Guillermo del Toro and Mike Flanagan Talk About Their Love Of Horror

Thanks to Netflix, directors Guillermo del Toro and Mike Flanagan have had their first-ever meeting of the minds. The friendly 12-minute conversation between the two fans of the horror genre covered a variety of topics, including their planned television series and other topics.

Del Toro created the Netflix anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities, also known as Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight. By bringing together a group of filmmakers to deliver a clever yet really terrifying experience, it seeks to revitalise conventional horror with a contemporary challenge.

The Midnight Club adaptation by Mike Flanagan, which centres on a group of eight terminally ill patients at the made-up Brightcliffe Home facility outside of Seattle, has a much more realistic plot and describes how the patients come together over the sharing of spooky stories and ultimately form a sinister pact.

Naturally, these most recent endeavours were front of mind for both creators when Netflix sat the two horror enthusiasts down for a talk this week. Del Toro opens up the discussion by asking where Flanagan got the idea for the show. For his part, the director of Midnight Mass, who already has The Fall of the House of Usher scheduled on Netflix, catered to both del Toro and the audience by recalling his love of Christopher Pike’s writings from his youth, who wrote the 1994 novel The Original Midnight Club. Flanagan realised the potential of the notion as the basis for an anthology series, and he took advantage of it by compiling more of Pike’s works.

The two men unintentionally shared the directing duties for two episodes of their respective films, allowing other filmmakers to demonstrate their talents by playing a more supporting role—something del Toro deliberately aimed to do with Cabinet of Curiosities. They also discussed how fulfilling it was to support other directors who shared their views.

Del Toro, who is known for inventing sympathetic monsters and complex adversaries, spoke about the ideas he provided to the anthology series while describing how the idea for one of his stories occurred to him while traveling around Europe simply from hearing the birds sing. This debate gave a succinct but significant glimpse into how a master uses his environment and myths to generate a powerful notion. Del Toro also provided input.

The two discussed their mutual love of horror in depth, with del Toro revealing a fascinating distinction between the aesthetic and mechanics of the genre that is sure to give fans a fresh appreciation of his earlier work, which includes some genuine horror franchise classics like Pan’s Labyrinth. The conversation became more philosophical as the two talked about the lure of terror and what it revealed about human nature. On a more personal level, Flanagan revealed how terror helped him grow up with courage that carried over into his real life.

The brief conversation was incredibly interesting, covering topics like the universality of fictional characters and classic works like Frankenstein. Viewers will undoubtedly develop a greater respect for the two extraordinary men involved as well as the genre they both adore and cinema as a whole after watching it.

This is particularly fortunate for Netflix because they have a wonderful selection of scary movies for all seasons, not just the Halloween ones.
