Dragon Ball Super: a Comprehensive Comparison of the Anime & Manga

The plot of the Dragon Ball Super manga isn’t a direct translation of the anime’s. These are the main distinctions between the two.

There are significant changes seen between anime and manga versions of Dragon Ball Super, despite the fact that they both basically follow the same plot and were published at the same time.

In conjunction with the famous return of the Dragon Ball franchise’s anime series in 2015, Toriyama’s renowned manga also made a triumphant comeback; this time, lifetime fan Toyotar is in command of the story and artwork moving forward, and the series’ original creator is in charge of the overall production.

The primary distinction is that Akira Toriyama left Toei (which produces the anime) and Toyotaro (which produces the manga) with character designs and broad plot ideas, and it is up to them what they do in between. They even have whole distinct filler scenes. .

A storyline aspect that appears in both the anime and manga is one that Toriyama particularly acknowledged. Thus, ideas like Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken or Mastered Super Saiyan Blue are not his own ideas because they already exist in the anime or manga, respectively. Since they already exist in the anime or manga, Saiyan Blue is not one of his creations.

In addition, the manga series only briefly mentions and draws inspiration from the Dragon Ball Super movies’ stories in order to synchronise the timeline of the various story arcs. As a result, even though the Resurrection of Frieza is seen in both the manga and the film, the manga just briefly explains those events before continuing.

The fact that the anime and manga followed different weekly and monthly schedules, as well as the canonical Dragon Ball Super movies that were produced, caused the former to swiftly surpass the latter despite both depicting the same essential series of events. This indicates that the Akame ga KILL anime series from 2014 and the Dragon Ball Super anime are somewhat related in the way that one influences the other and vice versa.

Additionally,  According to the manga, Ultra Instinct is a state that Goku is able to enter after years of arduous training with many masters. Master Roshi exhibits amazing agility during the Tournament of Power, demonstrating that he might be unstoppable for a brief period of time during the battle, even against Jiren, as long as he maintained concentration. He instinctively dodged, and it was so flawless that Beerus and Whis stared with great interest.

Contrarily, in the anime, Whis first defines Ultra Instinct as a method that allows a fighter’s physique and consciousness to become partially separated, allowing the fighter’s body to unconsciously dodge and attack.

Both the anime and the manga depict important elements differently, such as character relationships and the overall flow of events. The manga has significantly less discrepancies, especially in terms of character skills and the plot as a whole.

The outcome of the Tournament of Power is a triumph for Android 17 in both the anime and the manga, but the details of how he achieves this are very different.
In the manga adaptation of the events, it is explained that 17 could not have detonated his internal bomb because Krillin wished it away following the Cell Saga, however in the anime, 17 survives the explosion with little to no explanation.
