Tekken 7 was launched in 2017 after nearly two years in arcades. Since then, the game has gotten multiple season passes and ongoing content updates, but no new content has been added since the March 23, 2021 release of the character Lidia Sobieska and the Island Paradise stage.
During EVO 2022, a very quick and very unclear teaser was given, indicating that a new Tekken project is perhaps in the works.
The Tekken series has been operating since 1994, and it has established itself as one of the most successful fighting game franchises, with Tekken 7 featuring guest character appearances from Street Fighter’s Akuma, Final Fantasy 15’s Noctis, and King of Fighters’ Geese Howard.
Developer Bandai Namco allegedly revealed a new entry in the genre with an eight-second teaser clip presented at EVO, the world’s largest fighting game tournament, but left everyone guessing whether the game is Tekken 8 or a remake or remaster. The clip begins with fan favorite and series mainstay Kazuya Mishima in a sequence from his tale ending in the original Tekken game before switching to more modern-looking visuals. As Kazuya smiles and his eye goes crimson, the words “Get Ready” show on the screen, hinting at his demon metamorphosis.

With this teaser being so brief and no comment from Bandai Namco, it’s tough to tell what this next Tekken project is. The trailer focuses entirely on Kazuya, and the footage shown is from the franchise’s very first game, which could indicate a remake or remaster of some type. However, when the trailer switches to modern visuals, it is new footage.
It’s also worth noticing Kazuya’s red eye, which he didn’t have until the events of Tekken 4, which may hint that this new entry (whether it’s a direct sequel to Tekken 7, a Tekken spin-off, or something entirely different) will take place canonically after the events of Tekken 4.
Historically, EVO has been a treasure trove of announcements for fighting game aficionados. With previous important Bandai Namco announcements, such as Dragon Ball FighterZ gaining rollback netcode, EVO seems like the ideal opportunity to unveil the next main entry in the Tekken series.
With the NVIDIA leak revealing a slew of prospective games in development, including Tekken 8, it appears that this is a teaser for the next mainline game. However, nothing has been confirmed, so fans will have to wait a little longer.
Bandai Namco has unveiled the first Tekken content update since 2021, which includes a new character, Lidia Sobieska, as well as the Island Paradise battle scene. The publisher also gave spectators a preview into a future Tekken game as part of the EVO 2022 lineup, eliciting a strong response from the Tekken and fighting game communities.
Before its announcement, the game was described as “speculative games” in the infamous NVIDIA leak from September 2021. However, Bandai Namco has not officially stated whether the new Tekken game would be a remake or a sequel since the teaser was released.
Bandai Namco is “getting ready” for a new Tekken game
On the 7th of August 2022, attendees at this year’s Evolution Championship Series (EVO) 2022 were treated to a surprise reveal by publisher Bandai Namco. During the fighting game event, the publisher revealed brief footage featuring Tekken’s long-time character, Kazuya Mishima, alluding to a potential Tekken game in the works.
