Stranger things, which is coming with its new season, has received a last-minute content warning message from Netflix. This warning is given in the wake of the deadly Texas school shooting that left 21 people, including 19 children, dead. The reason behind the warning is reasonably logical.
But why the warning….?
The new season starts with a similar deadly scene, where it is shown that a young eleven uses her telekinetic powers, killing everyone present in the room with her, including children. The recent school shooting, which is one of the deadliest school shootings in America and the deadliest in Texas, happened only a day before the show’s season 4 premiere, which is why the warning was added by Netflix as the viewers could find the scene very disturbing.
Stranger things is known to depict some disturbing scenes which some viewers may find disturbing. Including such scenes is not a big issue, but the recent school massacre has disturbed people to their core, and it called for Netflix to include the warning. Also, the new season is now considered to be the darkest of all the seasons, which again calls for a warning.
The warning card
The warning card, which is visible to the US viewers only, read the following: “We filmed this season of Stranger Things a year ago. But given the recent tragic shooting at a school in Texas, viewers may find the opening scene of episode 1 distressing. We are deeply saddened by this unspeakable violence, and our hearts go out to every family mourning a loved one.” Along with this, another warning card was shown, which read “Warning: Contains graphic violence involving children”.
The warning move is a very thoughtful one, considering the deadly nature of the school attack that took place. This move is not done by Netflix alone, changes have been made in Hollywood and similar warning signs have been displayed.
Stranger things has been ranked consistently as one of the most popular shows since its release back in 2016. The viewers of the show have developed an emotional attachment with the show as they have seen the cast members grow up from being kids to now young adults and have witnessed their journey along with the show. The show receives love from viewers of almost all age categories because of its creative plot and intense energy from the whole team.
As a show this big and this famous, it is certain that its content will have at least some impact here and there on its viewers. And, as the very first scene of the new, long-awaited season started with graphic scenes of dead children, it became imperative for the streaming platform to add a warning so as to warn the viewers about what they were going to watch.
Mass shootings have now become a very frequent thing in the US, and massacres involving kids are bound to be disturbing for the people, not just of that particular country, but of the whole world. So a warning issued for the public is a good idea, as it gives an idea to the viewers about what they should expect from the show.
