According to Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian Season 4 is already in the works. The Mandalorian is a huge hit, as we all know. The Star Wars series debuted during the early stages of Disney+, and it has since established itself as a key original program for the streaming service, not only being renewed for multiple seasons but also laying the groundwork for major spinoffs such as the upcoming Ahsoka and The Book Of Boba Fett. It’s hardly surprise that Lucasfilm and Disney want more of the show, but it doesn’t make hearing directly from creator Jon Favreau that The Mandalorian Season 4 is in the works months before Season 3’s launch any less intriguing. Season 2 came to an explosive conclusion, and we’re all looking forward to the third season.
On Thursday, Lucasfilm debuted the first footage from The Mandalorian season 3 at Star Wars Celebration, and now Jon Favreau has confirmed that season 4 is actually in the works. During an interview with Cinema Blend, the series’ writer, director, and executive producer revealed that he is currently writing the show.
Fans are eager to continue the story of The Mandalorian and its spin-offs, even with new Star Wars Disney+ offers such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor. Lucasfilm has great plans for the future, which will be addressed in The Mandalorian Season 3 as the MandoVerse expands with The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic, and Skeleton Crew.
This is sure to please Star Wars fans, especially given rumors that season 3 of The Mandalorian could be the final season.
“With television, we’re really fortunate in that we don’t have to cram everything into an hour-and-a-half or two hours,” the filmmaker said, describing the benefits of long-form storytelling. “Slowly, we begin to tell stories. So now that Dave [Filoni] is working on Ahsoka, it’s heavily influencing my writing for [The Mandalorian] Season 4. It gets a lot more exact.”
How Jon Favreau’s Mandalorian Show Came To Be
Director Jon Favreau pitched Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy with a notion for a Star Wars television series starring Mandalorians in 2017, while working on The Lion King (2019), a photo-realistic remake of the 1994 animated movie. Dave Filoni, executive producer of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, was also working on a Mandalorian-themed series, and Kennedy suggested that he and Favreau meet to discuss their ideas. Favreau and Filoni had previously met at the Skywalker Ranch while working on Iron Man (2008), and Favreau later portrayed the Mandalorian character Pre Vizsla for Filoni in The Clone Wars.
Season 3 will premiere on Disney+ in February 2023, and plans for Season 4 and beyond are already in the works after footage was recently displayed at the Star Wars Celebration. Over a year ago, Moff Gideon actor Giancarlo Esposito teased the fourth installment, promising that the next two seasons will be when viewers “truly start to get answers.”
The series is set after the events of Return of the Jedi, and there have been hints throughout the series that we’ll learn more about the cloning program that eventually led to the birth of Supreme Leader Snoke. The true narrative behind the villain’s existence has never been completely disclosed, and given how divided the sequels were, fans would appreciate this.
You’ll also notice that Favreau appears to be confirming plans for Ahsoka to inform what we see in The Mandalorian and with Grand Admiral Thrawn every doubt up to something, all of these story strands may start to come together to tie up some loose ends.

After a divisive Sequel Trilogy, Lucasfilm looks to be looking at The Mandalorian’s critical and financial success as an opportunity to expand the Star Wars universe further. Kathleen Kennedy has claimed that the brand plans to move on from the Skywalker Saga, and Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have stated that they plan to explore more exciting and innovative stories on television that a feature film would not be able to represent.
With Favreau and Filoni already contemplating Season 4 of The Mandalorian, the wait after Season 3 could be much shorter than it was before. Now that his commitments to The Last of Us have been fulfilled, Pascal’s calendar appears to be lot more open this time around.
Between the current tale of The Mandalorian and the rise of the First Order in the sequel trilogy, Lucasfilm has a 25-year gap to work with. After Season 4, one fascinating idea could be to take a several-year time jump to get closer to The Force Awakens.
Season 3 of The Mandalorian will debut on Disney+ in February 2023.
