We’re excited to see what the future holds for our favorite Time Lord and her companions. Is Season 14 of Doctor Who canceled or will it air?
The Doctor takes us on some incredible adventures. However, recently, things have been a little slower. Due to the pandemic, the most recent season was reduced to six episodes and two specials from eleven.
We then learned that a third special would be added in 2022. As the legendary character, Jodie Whittaker is stepping down. Is this the final episode of the series? Is there going to be another rebirth?
The fob watch belongs to the Doctor! The “Flux” segment of Season 13, popularly known as Doctor Who: Flux, has been resolved, but the Time Lord’s mysteries are just getting started. While all of the immediate plot elements have been resolved, Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as the 13th Doctor is quickly coming to an end.
Here’s what to expect from Doctor Who in 2022, as well as how Season 13 altered canon, how many episodes Jodie Whittaker has left, and what Season 14 has in store for 2022 Autumn.
Is Doctor Who on hiatus?
Doctor Who fans will be pleased to hear some exciting news. This isn’t a show that has been canceled. The show will return for a 14th season, with Russell T. Davis serving as showrunner. That will bring a lot of joy to many individuals.
We only recently learned who would take over as the character. Ncuti Gatwa from Sex Education will be the 14th regeneration—okay, there are more regenerations tossed in there, and canon has been utterly broken, but I can’t deal with that right now.
What about this for some exciting Doctor Who season 14 news?
Not only will Ncuti Gatwa be the future Doctor, but a past Doctor, David Tennant, will also return! Not only that but he’ll be joined by Catherine Tate, another noteworthy alum.
The two are returning to honor the show’s 60th anniversary, according to the BBC, which makes sense given that Tennant earlier returned for the show’s 50th-anniversary special.
Here’s what incoming showrunner Russell T. Davies (who was around for Tennant’s first tenure as The Doctor) said about the decision in a statement:
“It appears to be impossible — first a new Doctor, then an old Doctor, paired with the delightful Donna, what is going on?” Perhaps there is an untold story here. Or a parallel universe. Or it could be a dream, a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can guarantee is that it will be amazing, with two of our biggest stars reuniting for a once-in-a-lifetime duel.”
Next season, Doctor Who fans will be in for a unique treat. For the 60th anniversary of the BBC series, which airs on BBC America in the United States, David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return. Last week, a new Doctor was also introduced. In season 14, Ncuti Gatwa will take over for Jodie Whitaker.
In a news statement, the BBC provided additional details on the unique appearance.
“The Doctor and Donna split up when the Doctor needed to wipe Donna’s memory and make her forget about him in order to preserve her life. He warned her family that if she remembers anything, she will die.
But, now that the two have met again, the great question is: what draws the Doctor and Donna together again?
“They’re back!” exclaims showrunner Russell T Davies. And it appears to be impossible – first a new Doctor, then an old Doctor, coupled with the delightful Donna, what is going on? Perhaps there is an untold story here. Or a parallel universe. Or it could be a dream, a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can guarantee is that it will be amazing, with two of our biggest stars reuniting for a once-in-a-lifetime duel.” David’s critically praised portrayal of the Doctor famously declared “I don’t want to go…” in his final episode. Well, it appears that he – and fans all across the world – have gotten what they wanted, as the legendary team is on their way back…”
What we don’t know is how Season 14 of Doctor Who will look. We just know that it will premiere in 2023.
David is largely recognized as one of the finest Doctors in the show’s history, which we probably don’t need to state. He masterfully combined the character’s charisma, appeal, and gravitas, allowing for plenty of humorous and emotional moments in the play. We also feel like he was a lot of people’s “first” Doctor, and many viewers develop attachments to the original Doctor they see. With Tennant and Matt Smith as the stars, Doctor Who began to become more of a global sensation; before that, we considered it to be a bit more niche in the United States.
Does this imply that there will be a New Year’s Day special?
I’d want to see us go back to the Christmas Day specials. I miss viewing new episodes with my family after dinner while trying to avoid a turkey coma!
More information will undoubtedly become available as the year progresses. In the fall of 2022, Doctor Who will air its final special. This will be Jodie Whittaker’s final episode on the show. We don’t know if the companions will accompany us.

Season 14 of Doctor Who: Everything We Know
Doctor Who will return for Season 14 with a new actor in the title Time Lord after Whittaker’s farewell tour in 2022. Chris Chibnall, the current showrunner, will step down, and new showrunner Russell T Davies will take over.
Davies isn’t strictly new, as lifelong Who fans will know. Davies reintroduced Doctor Who for the twenty-first century in 2005 and is thus credited with the revival of Who in the first place. Because Doctor Who was revamped with “Season 1” in 2005, we now say “Season 14.”
Davies is a well-known writer and producer in the Who fandom, as well as the creator of the spinoff, shows The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, although there are few examples of this in science fiction.
If George Lucas were to direct a new Star Wars film, or if Ronald D. Moore were to return to Star Trek and become showrunner on Discovery or Picard, Davies’ return to Who would be similar.
It’s uncertain how Davies will handle the upcoming season of Doctor Who, but it’s logical to presume that the taste of Season 14 will be closer to that of David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston’s era.
When will the Doctor Who season 14 trailer be released?
We can’t immediately move forward and get all the greatest footage because we don’t have our own TARDIS, so you’ll have to wait until autumn 2022 at the earliest to see what’s next in season 14. If our theory is true, a glimpse of Ncuti’s next Doctor could be presented at the end of Jodie Whittaker’s final episode.
