In the most recent episode of Paramount’s Halo series, Master Chief gets a little naughty. The Chief strips down in the third episode of the show, “Emergence,” and fans are treated to a full shot of the Chief’s cheeks while he does so. So, if you felt removing the helmet was a terrible idea, you might want to skip this episode.
In the third episode of Halo, Master Chief is confronted with a bullet stuck in the base of his spine. The Chief is guided through some self-surgery by his artificially intelligent guide Cortana to remove the bullet. While this scenario is designed to build a trusting relationship between the two legendary video game characters, the Chief’s globes are a touch distracting.
Of course, this isn’t the first time the Chief has been stripped of his suit, or at least a portion of it, in the series. For the first time in the character’s history, the protagonist removes his helmet in the first episode. This decision divided fans because it was an obvious departure from the video game, which never showed the Chief’s face. Many people believed that the hidden face was an important aspect of the character and that it should be kept. Others, on the other hand, seemed to find it a welcome difference from the video game, as well as a necessary step in the transition from video game to live-action adaptation.
“I will keep working my ass off each and every day to make this show the best version of itself, to bring attention and respect to this Halo universe we adore,” Master Chief portrayer Pablo Schreiber recently said in response to varied reviews to the show’s direction. Clearly, he meant it, at least the part about being an ass.
The Chief’s assured demeanour isn’t the show’s first incident of nudity. Last week’s episode of “Unbound” featured Makee, a human woman, stripping down for…reasons. With all of this happening in the first three episodes, I’m almost afraid to see how far the rest of the series will go, and how bare it will be. Nonetheless, it appears to be working for the series, which is performing well for Paramount.
