Exploding Kittens and Netflix Have Teamed Up to Create an Animated Series and a Mobile Game.

A new mobile game and TV series based on the popular franchise of the goofy card game Exploding Kittens will be developed by Netflix in partnership with Exploding Kittens creators.

“An adult animated comedy series” will premiere in 2023, while “an exclusive edition of the beloved mobile game” will be released in May. Netflix subscribers will be able to play the new game for free as part of their subscription.

At launch, Netflix’s version of Exploding Kittens will include two more cards that are not available on the App Store or Google Play. Later, additional cards and game elements “based on the anime series” will be released.

Although a new edition of Exploding Kittens is coming soon, Netflix spokesperson Tawni Argent tells The Verge that the existing version (which is a paid game) will stay available on app stores. There is no way to transfer any progress, expansion packs or saves you’ve made in the existing mobile versions of the game to Netflix’s version.

In May 2022, the game Exploding Kittens will be released.

In a first for the company, Netflix is launching a mobile game and TV series based on the famous Exploding Kittens card game. An adult animated comedy series starring Tom Ellis (Rush, Lucifer), Abraham Lim (Clickbait, The Boys), Lucy Liu (Shazam, Elementary), Ally Maki (Wrecked, Toy Story 4), Mark Proksch (What We Do In The Shadows, Better Off Saul), and Saheer Zamata (What We Do In The Shadows, Better Off Saul) will premiere on Netflix in May. (Woke, Home Economics).

Exploding Kittens, an animated cartoon about the endless battle between Heaven and Hell, sees both God and the Devil brought to Earth – in the form of chubby domestic cats – to wage their war.

Showrunners Shane Kosakowski and Matthew Inman are joined by Bandera Entertainment’s Mike Judge, Greg Daniels, and Dustin Davis as well as Chernin Entertainment Group’s Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping, as well as Elan Lee and The Oatmeal’s Inman, who also serve as executive producers.

The original gameplay of drawing cards to dodge the Exploding Kitten is retained in Exploding Kittens – The Game. New cards include Radar, which tells players where the Exploding Kitten is located in the deck, and Flip Flop, which allows players to reshuffle the deck.

Friends and family will be able to play with their favorite characters from the animated series in future cards and game mechanics based on the program. Netflix subscribers will get free access to the game, which includes single-player and multiplayer modes.

“The co-development of a game and animated series breaks new ground for Netflix,” Netflix Head of Adult Animation Mike Moon remarked.

The most imaginative, memorable, and unique video game of this century, Exploding Kittens, was our first choice for the basis of our world. We are thrilled to be collaborating with such a talented group on this exciting new project for Netflix.

Netflix’s Head of External Games, Leanne Coombe, says, “Our objective is to provide our users with excellent entertainment they’ll love in any format they prefer—whether it be a game or an animated series.”

Exploding Kittens’ digital team is delighted to collaborate with us to deliver this fun game to all age groups, including a few interesting enhancements specifically for our members, as we extend our mobile games collection.

Exploding Kittens Chief Creative Officer and creator of The Oatmeal, Matthew Inman, believes that only Netflix can bring his show and game ideas to reality.

Our community has been the heart and soul of the firm for the past six years, but we began Exploding Kittens on Kickstarter as a weekend project. A brand-new series and a brand-new game will provide our fans new opportunities to engage with our brand.”
