4 Summary The Dirty Lines climax brings the story to a stormy conclusion, not quite concluding it but certainly leaving it in a gratifying place.

The cultural background of Dirty Lines’ first season finale is the fall of the Berlin Wall, but it’s far from the only thing that appears to be falling. However, just as November 9, 1989 was a watershed point in human history, so too does a lot of new life emerge from the ruins of Teledutch and the people who have been drawn into its orbit. It simply takes some time to get there.

Take a look at these connections. Marly and Leon are dating after he divorced his wife in the previous episode, but she isn’t happy with the relationship, especially when he becomes snobbish about her job at Teledutch. Marly eventually breaks up with him and, following a chance encounter with Mischa, appears to be on her way to him until she sees him with another woman and turns around. This is all part of Marly’s personal independence, which stems from both her unsatisfying relationships and her conservative personality. As we witnessed at the outset of the season, she ultimately opens up enough to get high on molly and dance carelessly in the new year, but it’s been a long journey to get there (don’t worry, we’ll get back to it later).
Ramon, when it comes to personal independence. Despite Ramon’s clear apathy and Natasja’s lingering knowledge that she slept with Frank, he and Natasja are on the rocks, struggling to maintain an unfulfilling sex life. He eventually sleeps with Alexander, and as a result of this, he determines to tell his wife the truth about his sexuality. But, before he gets the chance, she discloses she’s pregnant, though she doesn’t say whether or not the baby is Frank’s. While it pulls Ramon and Natasja closer together, it also traps Ramon in a personal cage, preventing him from being who he truly is.
Meanwhile, Teledutch is a complete disaster. Frank has racked up an outrageous tax bill, and his general mishandling of the company leads to a brawl in the office between him and Ramon. He also has to surrender Anoek half of his assets as part of the divorce, which he refuses to do, so it’s no surprise he’s sitting in his Ferrari by the docks, pondering driving himself into a watery grave. He can’t commit, of course. His perspective shifted a little when his automobile flipped into the sea and he swam to safety. Teledutch can be saved, but he’ll have to take charge and be responsible in a way he hasn’t been in the past.
Dirty Lines is coming to an end.
Nastasja is able to work out a payment plan with the IRS, and Teledutch will be profitable again in a year or two. Uncle Jaap flees after it is discovered that he has been siphoning money from the company to the cult of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Wild Wild Country, available on Netflix, is worth a look if you’re interested in that guy). Teledutch appears to be on the mend now that the bad apple has been removed from the barrel. Frank even has plans to expand the company’s operations outside of the Netherlands, leaving his current position as Business Director unfilled. Fortunately, Ramon has a suggestion for who could take his place: Marly, despite the fact that she’s in the middle of a big breakthrough in female sexuality that she and Janna are breaking the fourth wall to tell us about.
In terms of whether Marly accepts the position, the episode is a little ambiguous. She initially declines, but when we return to the party sequence, Frank offers her the job while she’s high on ecstasy, and she seems to like it. So much so that she and Janna are both in bed with Frank when they wake up the next morning. Uh-oh.
