Lizzo has settled with the three songwriters who claimed she had lifted Truth Hurts from their demo.

Singer Sia has been in a battle with songwriters Justin and Jeremiah Raisen, Rolling Stone reports. She is fighting over who owns rights to her music after she left Sony Label Entertainment last year for unknown reasons; this all began when singer/songwriter Yves Rothman took credit on one of their tracks without permission back in October 2019 which led him to file lawsuits against both parties involved while also demanding payment from them ($100 million).
Lizzo’s hit single ” Truth Hurts” has been accused of plagiarizing an original song by two different artists. The Raisins and Rothman claim that their work, which was helpfully provided for Lizzom in the demo process leading up to her 2017 album release date, evolved into what we now know as part 1 on this tracklist – but not without some copyright infringement issues first!
Lizzo has sought a legal judgment that would grant them “a judicial declaration” and determine whether or not they co-authored Truth Hurts, as well as any rights to its profits.
The three songwriters countersued Lizzo in 2020, claiming she had plagiarized their music.
The court sided with Lizzo, deciding that “a joint author of one copyrightable work does not automatically gain ownership over any derivative creations in which they had no hand.”
The judge added that even though the Raisins and Rothman themselves admitted to Healthy being a stand-alone song, not a demo for Truth Hurts.
After several days of intense negotiations, the two sides finally reached an agreement. The parties were able to agree on terms that would dismiss this case with prejudice – meaning it cannot be brought up again in future trials or proceedings without both parties participating in arbitration first (The word ‘dismissal’ refers specifically when there are no appeals).
Under the terms of this settlement, both sides will be responsible for covering their legal fees. Other details on how much each party is paying in total have not yet been revealed.”
