Andy Warhol’s Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster), which sold for $104.5 million in 2013, is now the most expensive artwork ever to be auctioned at Sotheby’s and sets a new record as one of America’s favorite artists!
Warhol’s works are some of the most well-known in history, but this year there’s another one coming up that could virtually double his record.
Warhol’s 1964 painting of Monroe, named after her famous film role and entitled ‘Shot Sage Blue Marilyn’, will be auctioned off this May. The work has an estimated value of around $200 million dollars- which makes it the most expensive artwork ever sold at Christie’s!
The painting of Monroe used in the film Niagara comes from Warhol’s “Shot Marilyns” series, which are damaged by a bullet. The canvas was acquired by art dealer Thomas Ammann and will be sold at auction for proceeds to benefit his sister’s foundation that supports education & healthcare curated initiatives focused on these issues across America
