Apps for tablets will be promoted in the Google Play Store based on “Quality” rating.

Google wants to make 2022 the year of Android tablets, so the firm is now giving the Play Store some tablet love after releasing a tablet-focused Android 12L update, staffing up an Android tablet division, and publishing one or two tablet apps.

The idea is to make it simpler for tablet users to locate tablet apps rather than phone apps that have been stretched out.

The “ranking and profitability changes” in the Play Store come first. Devices in the coming months to favor high-quality applications and games,” Google writes. The rankings will influence how apps appear in search results and recommendations on the site, assisting users in finding the best-optimized apps for their device.

To score higher, an app must be of “excellent quality”. The requirements for this accreditation are detailed on a “big screen app quality” website, which includes common-sense tips for creating better tablet apps.

It begins with the “Basic compatibility” tier, which includes stuff like “support landscape orientation” (you’d be surprised how many Android applications don’t) and “don’t pillar-box your program.

” The “Better” tier includes large screen layouts, multi-window capabilities, and mouse and keyboard support. The “best” grade includes a completely responsive design for tablets, foldable, and desktop mode, as well as pen compatibility and mouse, right-click context menus.

Google Play will also categorize reviews based on device type and display the most appropriate review category by default. As a result, tablet users will see reviews for the tablet app, whilst phone users would get reviews from other phone users.

Google has revealed a comprehensive roadmap via the Android Developers Blog, which largely focuses on three new Play Store updates: ranking and promotability modifications, low-quality app notifications, and device-specific ratings and reviews.

Ranking and Promotability modifications: The Play Store’s ranking methodology will now take into account a variety of aspects ranging from fundamental compatibility needs like portrait and landscape support to more distinctive requirements such as keyboard and stylus capabilities.

This will have an impact on how applications appear in search results and recommendations on the homepage, to assist users in finding the best-optimized apps for their device.

Low-quality App Notifications: If tablet users try to install an app that may not operate properly on their devices, a message will appear to warn them. Google expects that this would help set expectations for how applications will appear and perform after installation.

Device-Specific Ratings and Reviews: Users will soon be able to see ratings and reviews broken down by device type (e.g., tablets and foldable, Chrome OS, Wear, or Auto) to help them make better judgments about which applications are suited for them.

In other words, if an app performs fantastically well on a phone but horribly on a tablet, a tablet user will receive a tablet-only rating.

Overall, there have been some significant enhancements to tablet app discovery on Google Play.  Now, all that remains is for developers, notably those from Google, to create tablet apps.
