I’m constantly switching between 60 FPS and 4K Graphics Modes in Horizon Forbidden West.

Horizon Forbidden West is every bit the technological spectacle for the PlayStation 5 that major first-party video games desire it to be. Guerrilla Video games recreates the American West in thirty-first-century detail, brilliantly bringing to life the diverse biomes of states like Utah, Nevada, and California (and, in the game’s story, the red blight that poisons these regions and their inhabitants).

But what is one of the easiest methods — if there is such a thing as the best way — to learn about everything in this vast world? Regardless, the PS5 version of the game offers two distinct visual settings, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Meanwhile, PlayStation 4 owners have no choice; the experience they receive is determined exclusively by whether or not they own a standard or slim system, or a PS4 Professional.

Horizon Forbidden West’s graphical modes for the PS5 and PS4 have been defined.

We’ve known for a while that Horizon Forbidden West will have two viewable modes on PS5, but Guerrilla Video Games hasn’t revealed any details on the visual settings until now. And Sony has just shown a video of the game’s PS4 version in the last two weeks.

I’ve been playing a PS5 assessment copy of the game for a few weeks now, moving back and forth between the rendering settings. The option, under Graphics Mode, is located beneath the Visible tab in the settings menu. The options include “Favor Resolution,” which, according to the sport, “favors a greater fidelity at a lower frame rate,” and “Favor Performance,” which “favors a higher frame rate at a lower fidelity.”I’ve been playing a PS5 assessment copy of the game for a few weeks now, moving back and forth between the rendering settings. The Favor Decision mode — the default option — operates in native 4K decision (2160p), with a frame rate of 30 frames per second and a combination of temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) and fast approximation anti-aliasing (QAA) (FXAA). The Favor Efficiency mode operates at 1800p resolution with checkerboard rendering and a frame rate of 60 frames per second. (This also applies to in-engine cutscenes, however, they’re the only area where you’ll often see drops beneath the target; the body charge in each mode is virtually locked in gameplay).

The resolution and visual high quality of the PS4 are determined by the console model. A base or thin PS4 offers native 1080p with TAA and FXAA, however, the PS4 Professional offers the same option as the PS5 efficiency mode: checkerboarded 1800p. In terms of body charge, the sport operates at 30 frames per second on all PS4 models; there is no 60-frame-per-second option.

It’s worth noting that the decision values stated above are maximums – the game employs dynamic decision in all graphical settings, scaling the image “where appropriate” to maintain the objective body charge in question, according to Sony.

On top of it all, there’s a nice touch (actually). Horizon Forbidden West’s user interface is rendered independently and overlaid on top of the sport — it isn’t affected by decision scaling — therefore the text and symbols stay sharp at all times. (The UI is displayed at native 1080p on PS4, native 1800p on PS4 Professional and in PS5 efficiency mode, and native 4K on PS5.) Furthermore, even when in decision mode, which runs at 30 frames per second, all menus run at 60 frames per second. Neat!

Which is better: PS5 decision or efficiency mode?

The difference between the Favor Resolution mode (4K, 30 fps) on the left and the Favor Performance option (1800p, 60 fps) on the precise is most noticeable in how vegetation is displayed, especially in the distance. But also look for the feel in the rope and carved wood of the Tenakth totem pole, the thatched roof and wood structure of the lean-to, and Aloy’s hair and clothes.

The twofold body charge is the clear and observable difference between the Favor Decision and Favor Efficiency modes. As someone having completed Horizon Zero Daybreak on a PS4 Professional in that recreation’s 30 fps Favor Choice mode, I can tell that it’s amazing (and useful) to be able to play the sequel at 60 fps for the first time. Aloy is underleveled in contrast to many of the robots she faces at the beginning, and the performance mode’s increased response has helped me survive several hairy bouts.

At the same time, when I’m playing an open-world game, I prefer to explore every nook and corner of that universe. When I’m admiring the scenic beauty of the landscapes and marveling at the level of detail in the characters’ outfits and instruments, consistency matters more to me than efficiency.

After all, the Favor Decision mode is the most effective display for Horizon Forbidden West’s stunning aesthetics. This game’s physique is rich with detail, making the post-apocalyptic environment feel alive. Close your eyes and gaze at each flower, rock face, animal (whether natural or robotic), and person; there isn’t a fuzzy texture to be seen, whether you’re above the floor or underwater. The native 4K rendering, along with Guerrilla’s combination of TAA and FXAA, results in a very crisp image that remains sharp even while moving. When dynamic scaling is enabled, it’s uncertain how much the decision can fall, but any resulting softness hasn’t been noticeable to me on this option.

Some people may value the elegant 60 fps animation of the Favor Efficiency option so much that they choose to play the entire game in that mode. Despite this, the two graphics modes appear quite close indirect screenshot comparisons such as those in this article, except for the 30 fps mode’s promised improvements in texture filtering and texture decision. Components such as shadows, lighting, and draw distance appear largely the same across all settings. And, although the efficiency mode has a far more controlled administration of element ranges — I’ve occasionally noticed objects or textures pop in as I approach them — this issue is usually covered by wonderful volumetric lighting effects, whether or not it’s a dusty haze hanging over the desert.

Having said that, the flaws of Horizon Forbidden West’s Favor Efficiency mode become much more apparent while the game is in action. And, like with Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, the lowered image high quality and readability is a trade-off I’m unwilling to pay to play at the next body charge (besides, as I am famous, in the fight).

As a result, I’ve spent practically all of my time in Favor Decision mode, gazing over the lovely settings at my own pace. When I encounter a combat situation, I pause the game and go to Favor Efficiency mode.

Is it a strange thing to say? Don’t respond like that. I like both approaches, and I’m pleased the sport allows me to enjoy my quirks. The ability to select a graphical style is very important in Horizon Forbidden West owing to the game’s nature: it features a large, beautiful world constructed by a team of environment designers and painters, but many of the machines and people inhabiting it are out to murder you on sight. That is to say, you will normally want to stop and smell the roses… until you need to avoid an attack by a robotic kangaroo.
