It is believed that there might be 10 million to 1 billion stellar-mass black holes floating calmly and silently around the galaxy.
When it comes to counting them, the only problem is that they’re virtually undetectable until someone manages to catch some passing material in their gravitational field.

The international team of scientists has discovered an unknown black hole that is just under 5,200 light-years distant for the first time.
They have found a new theory that is not yet peer-reviewed, which they posted on arXiv.
How did they catch this black hole?
Scientists use math and logic to examine the impact that a black hole has on its surroundings.
When light passes through a black hole, it is warped and bent by the intense gravity of that region. This phenomenon was first recognized as an optical distortion that has become known as “gravitational lensing.”
When a star seemed brighter than it should have been, scientists realized that something unseen must’ve amplified its light. It turns out the answer is gravity!
The gravitational microlensing effect allows us to detect tiny, faint objects that would otherwise be too difficult for our telescopes.
But this is the first time we’ve seen a solitary black hole.
“We announce the first unequivocal observation and mass measurement of an isolated stellar-mass black hole.”
The Hubble Space Telescope has been used to observe the area eight different times.
Up until recently, the Hubble Space Telescope had observations of eight different areas.
The research team was armed with information from their study and began crunching figures. They found that the best match for the data was black holes, not stars!
They were able to obtain measurements of the black hole as well, which is impressive for such an accomplished event.
Using observations from space, the team was able to figure out that this distant star has a mass and speed comparable with our sun.
They discovered a black hole with 7.1 times the mass of our sun!
This means that, at its event horizon, the black hole would be just 42 kilometers and 26 miles wide.

The distant light of a star was examined, and an unseen object smaller than ten times the length from Earth’s Canyon in Utah was discovered. That’s insanely cool!

When the astronomers determined that this object is moving across our galaxy at 45 kilometers (28 miles) per second, it became clear to them how much more fast-moving than normal black holes are. This means they must have found a runaway one in their study and not just any old stellar normcore guy going about his day like usual!
The most likely explanation is that this newfound stellar explosion was indeed a result of violence, like its predecessor starburst in space.
