Beginning Thursday, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Southeast Michigan.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Southeast Michigan and Metro Detroit, which will be in effect from Thursday afternoon until early Friday morning when rain, sleet, and snow move into the area.

The NWS issued the warning shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and it will be in effect for all of Metro Detroit, including Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Washtenaw, and Lenawee Counties, at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The same locations are also under a wind advisory until 8 p.m. Wednesday, as well as a flood watch until Thursday afternoon.

When will it start to snow in Southeast Michigan?

FOX 2 meteorologists have been watching this impending weather storm all week, with contradictory models providing inconsistent data. As the storm approaches, it appears that southeast Michigan may receive considerable snowfall.

Metro Detroit reached close to 50 degrees on Wednesday, but with a strong south wind. That wind will remain, but it will shift when a cold front approaches, bringing a lot of rainfall with it.

It will begin as rain due to the warm air, but the temperature will plunge. It then snows, and it appears like we’ll be shoveling a good bit, with estimates ranging from 4 to 8 inches.

The newest snowfall forecast predicts that flakes will begin to fall between 10 and 11 a.m. on Thursday, depending on where folks live. It’s forecast to rain all day and conclude around midnight.

The snow that fell earlier will get wetter and heavier as the day progresses.

While up to 8 inches of snow is anticipated, drivers returning home Thursday evening should only see 2-4 inches on the ground. Temperatures will drop as night falls, implying the possibility of ice Friday morning. It might make for difficult driving conditions on Friday.

Strong winds and warm temperatures are expected to prevail throughout the afternoon and evening on Wednesday. Around that time, the rain will begin to fall.

Due to the possibility of heavy rain falling over frozen ground, the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for portions of Southeast Michigan. “River flows may rapidly increase and reach catastrophic levels,” the NWS said in a statement.

The alert is expected to be in force until Thursday afternoon. It encompasses the counties of St. Clair, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee, and Monroe Counties The advisory covers the majority of the main cities in those counties.

Flooding might occur in rivers, creeks, and streams, as well as low-lying and flood-prone regions, as a result of the runoff.

The National Weather Service has expected four to eight inches of snow in the winter storm warning region. There will also be one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch of ice buildup due to freezing rain and sleet in the warning area. According to some of the better computer forecasts, six to seven inches of snow will be frequent. It is feasible to have a single nine-inch quantity.

From Kalamazoo to Lansing to Flint to Sanilac County, the purple-tinted region is a winter weather alert for three to five inches of snow.

The one key point I want you to remember is the delayed timing of the heaviest rains. There will be about of lesser snow and short freezing rain throughout the southern part of Lower Michigan on Thursday morning, but the heaviest snow will fall late in the afternoon and evening.
