ComingSoon is pleased to provide an exclusive preview of Oliver Coates’ (Aftersun) music for The Stranger. Coates is a composer, cellist, and electronic musician. The soundtrack will be available on October 21 and the movie is currently streaming on Netflix. Electronics and strings are combined in the score to create a menacing rhythmic backdrop for the frightful movie about a secret friendship between two strangers.
According to Coates, “The director Thomas M Wright sent me a recording of an underpass in Australia at night, the sound of vehicles passing overheard.”The sound had a physicality, breath, and was silent. We worked on The Stranger for eight months, beginning with brief sketches based on breathy dark string loops against his field recording before the shoot and throughout the edit.
We wanted the musical language to keep the film’s rhythm under pressure and to keep the motifs brief. It’s gloomy, but it moves quickly, like an escape from reality. In a film without any violence, there is a buildup of unbearable tension; the final 15 minutes, on the other hand, are a flood of tonal music, reversed basslines on strings, and cascading harmonics, followed by a wide outpouring of the body’s stored emotions.
The Stranger soundtrack’s “Rylett Convergence” can be heard below:
“Two strangers form a friendship. This is a dream come true for Henry Teague (Sean Harris), who has been worn down by a lifetime of physical labor, according to the movie’s synopsis. Mark, played by Joel Edgerton, his new friend, becomes his ally and savior. However, neither is who they seem to be, and both have secrets that could end their lives. In the background, one of the largest police operations in the country is getting closer.
