After spending two years in Early Access development, the monster-collecting MMORPG Temtem from developer Crema was made available in version 1.0 on September 6, 2022. Temetem distinguishes itself from other Pokemon-inspired games with a streamlined, non-randomized fighting system and a stronger emphasis on diversity and representation in addition to its massively multiplayer capabilities.
Temtem’s game director, Guillermo Andrades, and Lucia Prieto, Crema’s community manager, spoke with GameRant about the game’s distinctive appeal, its development process, and its future goals. The interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.
Andrades: Hi! The game director for Crema is me, Guillermo Andrades. It can be difficult to pick a favorite Temtem because you have so many things you appreciate about them from your years of working with them. Momo, which is named after my actual dog, will be my choice.
Prieto: Good day! Luca Prieto is Crema’s CM, and my name is Luca. I have a lot of favorite Terms, but if I had to choose just one, I’d pick 0b10 because, in my opinion, a sphere with large eyes is the pinnacle of monster design. The Mental type is my favorite kind!
Temtem is your standard monster-collecting journey with all the familiar parts and jingles, but with an online-focused twist, according to Prieto. On any of the supported platforms, you will be able to enjoy and explore the Airborne Archipelago with other players from around the world and find over 160 Temtem to tame, trade with, or fight. It will seem both familiar and new since the environment is exciting and unique and because the full campaign may be played cooperatively with another player.
Prieto: That is the system for battle. Combat in Temtem is entirely strategic, more difficult, and extremely gratifying to master because there is no element of chance involved. The narrative is also a little more sophisticated and hilarious, more focused on pop culture, with open LGBTQ+ representation and a lot of inside jokes from the local scene.
Andrades: We didn’t want to overly dilute it because we knew we were going to have a very small number of creatures (originally we were thinking of having approximately 140). We believe that a category with only a few animals is either irrelevant or overly relevant. There are currently no further types scheduled for release in the future.
Prieto: There are currently 164 Temtem that players may tame, with a third Mythical Temtem on the horizon.
Guillermo: While fighting is the main focus of the majority of Temtem’s activities, some of them change the formula just enough to seem unique. For instance, there is a draught game style where players must build a team from scratch utilizing several possibilities of pre-defined Temtem.
Andrades: The main distinction is that Temtem battles contain no random components. Crits, chances, randomized status effects, etc. do not exist. Even if everything is calculable and predictable, countless more aspects affect combat, making them remain interesting and enjoyable.
Stronger methods may exhaust your team’s stamina, forcing you to rest in the following round or switch to another team. This is another significant shift from the previous system of using PowerPoint (PPs) for techniques. This adds a new degree of strategy, requiring you to research which tactics to use first and when, depending on your stamina usage and the condition of your team.
