How Studio Interference Nearly Altered the Star Wars Finale, Know the Details

Icons Unearthed: Star Wars on Vice TV was one of the summer’s most surprising television events. The latest episode of this series, which looks into the making of Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones, will air on August 16 at 10 p.m. ET. This presentation is noteworthy because it provides a plethora of previously unseen material on George Lucas’ space opera.

Star Wars was the most talked-about movie (and pop culture) franchise before the internet made it possible to discover information on the original and prequel trilogy. What, if anything, remains to be found about Star Wars that hasn’t already been thoroughly covered? At this point, the entire filmmaking process has been accomplished.

The director of Icons Unearthed, who is also the brains behind The Toys That Made Us, The Movies That Made Us, and At a Toy Store Near You, scored the biggest fandom scoop in recent memory by securing Marcia Lucas, the former wife of George and editor of the original Star Wars, for her first-ever on-camera interview. Marcia is a significant character in Star Wars lore, and this is the first time her voice has been heard outside of a long-forgotten newspaper article.

Volk-Weiss told us in the Den of Geek area at San Diego Comic-Con, “I’ve been studying Star Wars since I was five, so I would say throughout the last 10 years, I probably learned maybe one or two new things about Star Wars in any given year. After his six-hour interview with Marcia Lucas for Icons Unearthed, during which he “probably learned 50 to 60 new things,” everything changed for him.

He said, still reeling in the best way possible from the interview, “Almost every five or six minutes, she said something where I couldn’t pay attention to what else she was saying because I was like still trying to recover from what she had just dropped.” “I spent six hours there.

The conclusion of Star Wars could have been very anticlimactic if Fox studio executives had their way, which is arguably the most important new piece of information Volk-Weiss discovered.

Since the film was over-budget and plagued by production issues, Lucas stated in the interview that her then-husband had to fight for the victory. This means that in a parallel universe, Star Wars would have ended with the Millennium Falcon fending off “four tie fighters,” as Volk-Weiss said.

Even trying to imagine?

This struggle was undoubtedly won by George Lucas, as the destruction run of the Death Star went on to become one of the most recognizable scenes in 1970s cinema. However, imagining what might have been being fascinating.

Thanks to the extensive research done for Icons: Unearthed, these previously undiscovered facts help paint a clearer picture of how much more there is to learn about the Star Wars franchise as a whole. For this reason, we should be grateful that scholars like Brian Volk-Weiss are leading the charge to uncover this crucial information about a galaxy far, far away.
