Moon Knight, a Disney+ programme, has gotten generally positive reviews, with an 87 per cent Rotten Tomatoes critics score and strong viewership statistics. The powerful mix of Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke’s combined acting abilities, and an intriguingly dark narrative involving divine retribution.
However, the programme is receiving a lot of vehement criticism and negative reviews because of a tiny allusion to a historical incident that is still up for debate. In particular, Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), the antagonist of Moon Knight, recites a catalogue of past crimes that, in his opinion, may have been avoided by the Egyptian goddess Ammit’s wrathful future judgement. He makes allusions to Nazi Germany’s actions while under Hitler’s direction.
He discusses the actions of Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler and the Roman Empire under the notorious Nero, before moving on to the Ottoman Empire’s genocide of ethnically Armenian residents during World War I.
The issue that Moon Knight has delved into (as some view it) is that the modern-day Turkish country (which was created following the overthrow of the Ottoman monarchy in 1922) does not recognise the Armenian genocide as such. Turkey’s official position is that ethnically Armenian residents of the Ottoman Empire were deported and transferred for military reasons. In contrast, the great majority of historians throughout the world, as well as 31 countries, term it ethnic cleansing.
The current nation of Turkey has various reasons for denying the actions of its predecessor state, but it is widely held among their cultural and historical beliefs that the documented forced death marches of over one million ethnic Armenians, as well as internment in concentration camps in the Syrian Desert, is a widely held propaganda system. It’s doubtful that Disney’s traditionally apolitical stewards foresaw this for Moon Knight.
As a result, there has been online criticism accusing Moon Knight of spreading inaccurate information regarding the Armenian genocide and propagating a fake history (that once again, is widely held as fact by the majority of other nations).

Given that it is not a significant component of the storyline of Moon Knight and was simply an offhand comment, Disney and its Marvel Studios unit will most likely hope that this will be a fire that dies out on its own. Given that Disney is now being chastised on all sides of the political spectrum for their opinions on LGBTQIA+ problems in the United States, it appears that they will avoid delving any further.
Moon Knight has been a change from standard MCU fare thanks to its dark themes and brutal violence, but it doesn’t appear like engaging with a contentious political issue like this was the show’s intention.
It’s still unclear if the show will be renewed for a second season (a lot appears to hinge on Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke’s characters’ survival), so who knows what additional controversies they’ll encounter in the remaining episodes.
