The finest burns from the BAFTA Film Awards by Rebel Wilson

As host, Rebel Wilson, who has been one of the most memorable presenters at the BAFTA Awards in the past, did not disappoint.

On Sunday, the “Pitch Perfect” star stole the stage at the BAFTA Awards, which were the first to be held in person since the organization’s trailblazing 2020 diversity review.

With 11 nominations, ‘Dune’ tops the BAFTA nominees this year, followed by Jane Campion’s ‘The Power of the Dog,’ which just won the Directors Guild of America’s DGA Award for best feature picture. ‘Belfast,’ directed by Kenneth Branagh, garnered six nominations, while ‘No Time to Die,’ ‘Licorice Pizza,’ and ‘West Side Story,’ each received five.

Wilson presented the best director award at the 2020 ceremony and brought the house down with a gag-filled speech that handled to burn Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, COVID-19 (still a theoretical threat for Brits), the lack of swag bags, “Cats” (in which she starred), and the lack of women nominated for best director all in one fell swoop.

During the 2022 ceremony, no one was spared from Wilson’s snide remarks.

She later quipped about a Prince Andrew musical set at the Pizza Express & auditioning for the “Cats” sequel in the same breath.

Wilson was out there tossing out her old bras as consolation prizes and rolling out a cake of Benedict Cumberbatch’s face to the “Power of the Dog” actor, despite the fact that the BAFTA awards seldom see hosts cede the stage for crowd pranks.

Wilson made one of the rare comments to the full-fledged conflict going on elsewhere in Ukraine, extending her middle finger to the camera and declaring “this is the same symbol in a fairly apolitical occasion, he said “fuck you” to Russian President Vladimir Putin in all languages.

Wilson also mentioned the industry’s continuing hurdles for women. It was often difficult to discern if she was kidding or not, and how much of what she said was based on actual experience.

My next film was just canceled because the studio wanted it to be a female-driven film, she says. To giggles from the audience, she replied, “Fuck you, Lionsgate.”

“Whenever I want to make myself cry, I imagine how much The Rock got paid for ‘Jungle Cruise,” says the character.
