The word “Foldable” has been tossed around quite a lot these past few days. With Samsung already in works for a completely bezel-less display, they have planned for a convertible smartphone as well. The reports suggest that the convertible device by Samsung is expected to release officially in 2020 but we hope to see a glimpse of what Samsung is working on next year.
As pointed out by folks over at Engadget, LG applied for three smartphone names Flex, Foldi and Duplex at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). It is expected that the tech giant will use them for naming their future devices but the names themselves spell an interesting story. The words Flex, Foldi and Duplex all lead to one conclusion and that is the concept of foldable smartphones. LG has been outstanding with their display innovation from 8K TVs to flexible OLED panels. The brand has gained popularity worldwide and it is evident that they want to pass that on to their smartphones.
If LG supposedly builds a foldable smartphone in the future then they may pose a threat to Samsung’s flawless plan to corner the premium market space. The foldable phone will act as a direct competitor to Samsung and critics will most certainly compare them both directly. There will, however, be quite a few factors which will determine the actual winner. LG has been phenomenal with their display technologies but their smartphones haven’t really crunched numbers. Samsung, on the other hand, has a vast experience with smartphones and is known to bring the best to the table.
Moreover, Samsung is reportedly working with Google for the software of its foldable flagship. LG would definitely want to overtake Samsung in all fields but to beat a manufacturer like Samsung they will most definitely need to step up their game. Although this concept has not been successful in the past years with brands like LG and Samsung working the concept, things are going to be interesting. Furthermore, the competition among premium smartphones will also help the consumers in bringing the retail prices down. As we have learnt that competition triggers better service and a better experience for customers.
With flexible OLED sales boosting by a whopping 250% till 2020 we expect more and more manufacturers to take on the next big trend and enlighten the consumer base. With Chinese brands invading international grounds it seems that the older players in the game have to opt for a change in strategy.
