Following the launch of the current 2018 MacBook Air, which only comes with a measly Intel Core i5, it seems like Apple is planning a faster MacBook Air. Apple’s 2018 MacBook got spotted today featuring an Intel Core i7 processor, on Geekbench, a popular benchmarking platform.
Taking a look at the results, the alleged MacBook Air 2018 with Intel Core i7 does seem a tad bit faster than its already-official Core i5 counterpart. However, the improvement seems marginal. The Core i7 MacBook Air 2018 is around 15-20% faster than the Core i5 variant, according to these Geekbench results.
With a not-so-beefy dual-core 1.8GHz i7 processor, the improvements are very minute. Other specifications are also exactly the same; 16GB LPDDR3 RAM, same motherboard, BIOS and cache speed/sizes. According to Geekbench, the Core i5 variant actually outperforms its i7 brethren in most single-thread tasks, while the i7 shines in multi-threaded workloads.
We do think that the MacBook Air is in need of a buff in hardware specifications, but this is not what the community is asking for. The new iPad Pro packs more power than this in some cases. However, with something like a 4-core Intel Core i7 (8565U or 8650U) processor, the MacBook Air 2018 is going to be one sleek and powerful machine – and this is entirely possible. We’ll see what Apple brings to the table with the MacBook Air as time goes on.
