Reddit seems to be the best place to express yourself with a community. As DICE revealed the trailer for their next title, Battlefield V, EA received a considerable amount of hate regarding the inclusion of women in WWII and how accurately DICE has decided to portray the era.
Days after releasing the trailer for their next game, EA’s flak hasn’t died off. In fact, the Battlefield V trailer has more dislikes than likes. At the very moment of writing this article with 8 Million views, the trailer has 307k dislikes and 273k likes. Yup, you read that right.
So, a user on Reddit did try to troll the community by showing that the Deluxe Edition of the game had a man on it’s cover and the Standard Edition of the title had a Woman on its cover. Catching upto the scene, the Design Director at DICE, Alan Kertz, decided to chime into the discussion. Followed by a slow clap, he said…
After he slow clapped, he was then asked about what he feels about the downvotes. He said:
I take every single downvote on our trailer as a vote of someone still interested in the series and the game.
It’s not hate that I fear. It’s apathy.
He further added.
I knew this was going to be a fight when i pushed for female soldiers in Battlefield. I have a daughter, and I don’t want to ever have to answer her question of “why can’t I make a character that looks like me” with “because you’re a girl.”
I fundamentally feel to my core this is the right way and I will find myself on the right side of history.
And I think many people will play the game despite their reservations. And maybe learn something about either history or themselves. That is part of the making games art.
While I am in no position of making a comment, I do think that if that’s the way how BFV is about to be I personally won’t mind it.
Battlefield 5 is set to release on the 19th of October 2019 on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
