“Costumes are for happy people, and people aren’t happy,” Purvis reflected on the somber mood during the pandemic. With events on hold, he realized that people had little need for headdresses, gowns, or historical attire. Traditional revenue streams had dried up.

One employee, Ismael Padilla, is a single father of three, while Maria Escobar, the seamstress, supports her children and grandchildren in El Salvador, which had been recently devastated by Tropical Storm Cristobal. Purvis, determined to keep his team employed, even forwent his own salary, making the difficult decision to reduce his personal income to maintain payroll for his dedicated staff.

Purvis’s commitment to his employees resonated deeply with his loyal customer base. Realizing the dire situation, they rallied around him, offering support in any way they could. Purvis reached out to long-standing customers, humbly requesting their assistance during this challenging time. One customer in Las Vegas responded generously, purchasing 34 masks, providing a much-needed boost to the shop’s dwindling funds.
