Film enthusiasts and history buffs, get ready for the ultimate cinematic experience of the year! Cinecon, the annual five-day convention celebrating classic movies, has released its schedule for the 2022 event, and it’s packed with exciting screenings, guest speakers, and special events.
Cinecon 2022 will take place from August 31 to September 5 at the historic Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, California. As always, the convention will showcase rare and hard-to-find films from the silent and early sound eras, as well as offer a variety of programming related to the history and preservation of film.
One of the highlights of this year’s convention will be a tribute to the legendary actor and filmmaker Buster Keaton, who would have celebrated his 127th birthday on September 5.
Cinecon will present several of Keaton’s classic films, including “The General” (1926) and “Steamboat Bill Jr.”
(1928), as well as a panel discussion with Keaton’s biographer, film historian James L. Neibaur.
Another special event at Cinecon 2022 will be a screening of the newly restored version of “The Thief of Bagdad” (1924), a fantasy adventure film directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Douglas Fairbanks.
The restoration, which was a joint effort between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Film Foundation, took several years to complete and will make its world premiere at the convention.
In addition to these special events, Cinecon 2022 will also feature a wide variety of classic films from Hollywood’s Golden Age, many of which have not been seen on the big screen in decades. Some of the highlights include:
“The Kid” (1921), Which has been directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin
“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1923), starring Lon Chaney
“Scarface” (1932), directed by Howard Hawks and starring Paul Muni
“The Maltese Falcon” (1931), a pre-Code version of the classic detective story
“Gilda” (1946), starring Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford
“Singin’ in the Rain” (1952), Which is by far one of the most beloved musicals of all time
In addition to the film screenings, Cinecon 2022 will offer several panel discussions and presentations on topics related to film history and preservation.
Some of the confirmed speakers include Academy Award-winning film editor Anne V. Coates, film historian and author David Pierce, and archivist and preservationist Nancy Mysel.
As always, Cinecon will also have a dealer’s room filled with movie memorabilia, books, posters, and other collectibles. Attendees can also participate in a silent auction, with proceeds going toward the preservation of classic films.
Tickets for Cinecon 2022 are available now, with prices ranging from $20 for individual screenings to $225 for a full five-day pass.
Discounts are available for students and members of certain film organizations. Those interested in attending are encouraged to book their tickets early, as Cinecon has sold out in past years.
