Howie Mandel was absent from the judging panel for a few America’s Got Talent tryouts. He is now explaining why he missed the auditions.
It’s time to clarify why veteran judge Howie Mandel was not there for the auditions that were broadcast during the second half of Tuesday, June 14’s America’s Got Talent episode. Only Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, and Heidi Klum were present on the judging panel due to his absence. The measure would pass with two “yes” votes, but it would be instantly halted with three red buzzers.
So why didn’t Howie appear for the live shows?
Howie’s absence from the judging panel was revealed by Terry Crews, and the only justification offered was that he was ill and would not be able to attend the recording. However, after an audition clip was shared on Twitter, followers discovered that he was absent earlier. They questioned if another judge would preside over the panel in his absence. Howie is now speaking up about the reasons he skipped a number of those America’s Got Talent auditions.
Howie skipped some of the auditions because he tested positive for Covid-19, according to Talent Recap. Howie claimed to have caught the virus at the April Kids Choice Awards.
Watching the judge’s Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara’s attire, which changes frequently but remains the same the following week, makes the editing especially clear.
Since the auditions are pre-recorded before the Live Shows begin, Howie has since recovered from whatever ailment he had, and on Tuesday night, he was able to display his sense of humor by tweeting: I apologize to everyone.

When AGT won the category for a reality show. However, it wasn’t immediately apparent how many auditions he would miss or when he would return.
Uncertainty exists around the number of taped auditions Howie missed because AGT most likely aired the auditions out of sequence. Some viewers started to wonder if a guest judge would be replacing him because that had happened in the past. Howie appears to have been absent during later auditions, though, as the article linked above states that AGT tapings started on April 1, and the Kids Choice Awards were held on April 9. Howie might have only missed a little amount of the AGT auditions, in that case.
A guest judge is not permitted to replace a regular judge on the jury.
The production team will still record America’s Got Talent even though Howie was absent from several of the audition sessions. The series would have run longer than expected if the tapings had been stopped if they were trying to maintain their regular airing schedule from the end of May to the middle of September. Fans need not fear, though, since Howie was visible on the episode that aired on Tuesday, June 21, and appeared to immediately resume judging.
