The Sci-Fi Trope “Giving Radio to the Romans” Explained

Time travel is difficult for a variety of frustrating reasons. Numerous things may go wrong, and the smallest misstep can start changing everything, with comically dire consequences. So, if everything could be changed, a time traveler may as well take a big sweep by giving a caveman an iPhone.

People travel back in time for a wide range of reasons if they do so at all. If a traveler desires to correct something that they believe went wrong, there are numerous possible consequences to consider. There seems to be a lot of fun that can be had if you only want to mess around. Giving the Romans radio can accomplish both goals.

Trying to give airwaves to the Romans is a fun common term for passing something in the distant future on to somebody from the past. This would start leaving the recipient with just a mystical device that they would be unable to comprehend. Giving a vacuum cleaner to a Neanderthal caused approximately nine or ten levels of misunderstanding because someone has to describe what a “floor” is.

Humans, on the other hand, are inquisitive and hardworking. With enough time and guidance, humanity will figure out every one of the moving components and how everything works. This single action would catapult technological advancement through several stages of development. The aftereffects are intricate and can manifest themselves in a million different ways.

This trope can manifest itself in two ways. Either anyone from today arrives in the past and palms them something mundane, or an entity from the long term arrives and brings us about something incredible.

The former is a special category of Unofficial History fiction. The quintessential narrative will encounter the radio as well as the Romans in a few key ways. Like Ash in Army of Darkness, the hero of the story may only be looking to impress the locals for a short time. These works rarely address the consequences of abandoning advanced weapons mostly in the distant past.

In a Cargo Cult scenario, the locals could forego technological capabilities and instantaneously worship their fresh trinket as a god. A faction within the community may also use the development for self-gain without annoying to conduct any scientific research, leaving only a few as undisputed dictators but also destroying society. However, in the best case, the time traveler will recover to the modern-day hundreds of years after they left.
