Overwatch Coins, the new virtual currency in Overwatch 2, are used to buy in-game cosmetics. Overwatch Coins can be obtained either completing Weekly Challenges or by paying real money to buy them.
Players of Overwatch 2 were shocked to discover how incredibly tough it was to obtain Overwatch Coins without paying money when they first launched the game. By completing tasks, players can accumulate up to 60 Overwatch Coins each week. A Rare Overwatch 2 skin costs 300 coins, so to put that amount in perspective, players would need to save money for more than a month in order to get even the most basic of skins. Players must accomplish all of their Weekly Challenges for eight whole months to earn a single skin because Legendary skins cost 1900 Overwatch Coins.
Although 100 Overwatch Coins cost $1, users who spend $20 or more also receive extra coins. Spending money is the only trustworthy way to gain cosmetics in Overwatch 2, as there are only 60 cents worth of free coins offered each week. In Overwatch 2, players may also unlock specific cosmetics using the Battle Pass, however since the Premium Battle Pass costs $10 and costs 1000 Overwatch Coins, players would need to grind Weekly Challenges for nearly four months to obtain it.
The Free-to-Play economic model of Overwatch 2 has dissatisfied many users. Overwatch 2 is already relying on FOMO—the fear of missing out—to drive its microtransaction system, even if Overwatch Coins are only used for cosmetic items now. In the future, heroes from previous Battle Passes will also be unlocked using Overwatch Coins. In retrospect, the hated loot box system from Overwatch 1 seems more appealing due to the slow stream of Overwatch Coins and the significant price increase for purchasing cosmetics.
Overwatch 2 has had a difficult launch. The Battle Pass, many DDoS assaults, and criticism of the Overwatch hero unlocking system make the almost nonexistent options for earning Overwatch Coins without paying money mere icing on the cake. Overwatch 2 must take steps to improve accessibility for free-to-play players if it is to continue to be successful.
