Indiana Jones 5: Who Could Mads Mikkelsen Be Playing? Know The Truth

Indiana Jones 5 is less than a year away. The film, which is said to be Harrison Ford’s final outing as the famous adventurer, is set to be released on June 30, 2023. Ford is joined by some new cast members (as well as some familiar faces), with Boyd Holbrook and Mads Mikkelsen being two of the most recognizable new additions.

The plot of this fifth installment is unknown, but Ford and co. appeared at the D23 Expo in Anaheim earlier in September 2022, and were visibly excited about what they had been working on. The first footage from the new film was also shown at the event, though it was not made public. This teaser could be the first hint at Mads Mikkelsen’s role in Indiana Jones 5. Though not much is known at this time, it appears that the Danish actor will be playing a villain.

Mikkelsen is no stranger to playing the villain in major franchises, having made his English-language debut opposite Daniel Craig’s James Bond in Casino Royale. Despite playing a variety of heroes and protagonists in his native Denmark, that film introduced him to English-speaking audiences as a villain. Mikkelsen’s antagonist roles continued with three seasons of Hannibal, a cult series that was canceled but Mikkelsen says he hopes to resurrect one day. He played the title character in that show, another adaptation of the well-known cannibalistic serial killer.

Mads Mikkelsen recently replaced Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts film. Mikkelsen was reminiscent of his Casino Royale villain in this Wizarding World film, particularly with his threatening and wry smile and the uniqueness of one of his eyes (his character in James Bond had a scar along his face).

That pattern appears to be continuing. The Nazis are back in Indiana Jones 5, and a few were shown in exclusive D23 Expo footage. Interestingly, Mikkelsen was one of these Nazis present at the event, and this panel in particular noted that he was dressed in a Third Reich uniform. It appears that Harrison Ford’s final appearance as Indiana Jones will see him face Nazis once more, returning to the franchise’s and the character’s roots fittingly.

Interestingly, Mikkelsen previously collaborated with Lucasfilm on Star Wars in Rogue One, but he played a hero (of sorts) in the film. He joins Harrison Ford in a select group of actors who will appear in both Star Wars and Indiana Jones but will play opposing characters in the latter. The specifics of Mads’ character, such as his name, motivations, social standing, and how he comes into contact with Indy, are unknown, but he appears to be playing a villain.

Indiana Jones 5 will be released in theatres on June 30, 2023.
