A Big Decision by Bill Gates to End Polio at a Faster Rate. Read More and Get Updated.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed an additional $1.6 billion to the fight against polio, joining the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s (GPEI) call to help end the disease.

This new commitment brings the Gates Foundation’s total investment in polio eradication to more than $4.5 billion since 2007. The additional funding will be used to support GPEI’s efforts to vaccinate children and strengthen health systems in countries where polio is still endemic.

The Gates Foundation’s commitment comes as GPEI is facing a funding shortfall of nearly $2 billion over the next three years. The initiative needs these funds to continue its work in countries where polio is still endemic, as well as to prepare for potential outbreaks in countries that have been declared polio-free.

The Gates Foundation’s new commitment is a critical show of support for GPEI and its efforts to end polio. With this new funding, GPEI will be better positioned to achieve its goal of a world free of polio.

In May 2013, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a new commitment of $1.8 billion to help eradicate polio. The new commitment will support GPEI’s work over the next six years to finish the job of eradicating polio. With this new commitment, the Gates Foundation joins other major donors in calling for an end to polio.

These include the governments of Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the Rotary International and the World Health Organization.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has been a leader in the fight to end polio, and we are committed to supporting the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in its efforts to ensure a polio-free world. In addition to our financial support, the Foundation provides technical expertise and resources to help GPEI partners accelerate progress toward eradication.

The Foundation is also working to develop new tools and strategies to address the remaining challenges in polio eradication. We are supporting research to improve surveillance and detection of wild poliovirus, as well as studies to assess the feasibility of different approaches for delivering oral polio vaccine (OPV) in hard-to-reach populations.

In addition, we are funding work to develop new vaccines that could one day be used in the event that wild poliovirus reappears. We remain committed to ending this disease once and for all, and will continue to work with our partners around the world until every child is protected from this preventable disease.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has joined the call to help end polio, with a new commitment of $50 million. This brings the Foundation’s total commitment to $105 million since 2013.
