Overwatch 2: Deals With Lead Hero Designer’s Death Weeks Before Release

You’d have a hard time finding Geoff Goodman has officially departed Blizzard Entertainment, other than from the former game director Jeff Kaplan, who left Blizzard in April 2021. Geoff Goodman was part of the team as recently as June of this year when he responded to inquiries from the press regarding the introduction of new heroes in Overwatch 2. He was in charge of several significant hero designs and reworks.

Geoff Goodman, the chief designer of the heroes for Overwatch 2, reportedly left Blizzard this year, according to PC Gamer. One of the Overwatch team’s most known faces was Goodman. Goodman’s involvement with Overwatch dates back to the time the group was still working on Project Titan before it was known as Overwatch.

After being canceled, Titan was revived as the 2016 release of the team-based hero shooter. Goodman was one of the few faces of Overwatch outside of the game’s previous director Jeff Kaplan, who departed Blizzard in 2021, and was regularly requested to speak on balancing adjustments and new characters in interviews and events.

According to the first PC Gamer article, Geoff Goodman’s exit had been predetermined for some time. It’s difficult to estimate how long, but a Blizzard representative informed PC Gamer that he decided to depart “early this year.” Goodman’s most recent public appearance occurred at a June news conference. He left the firm in line with a pattern of seasoned Blizzard personnel doing so.

Kiriko is the most recent hero to be revealed, with Goodman serving as the primary hero designer. Fans are excited to get a new support hero in Overwatch, but that joy has been dampened by the departure of this long-time Blizzard designer.

The journey leading up to the release of Overwatch 2 was a lengthy one. Overwatch fans are dubious about how smoothly Overwatch 2 will debut after several delays and a contentious debate over the inclusion of a battle pass. Overwatch 2’s principal hero designer, Geoff Goodman, has departed the team as the game is virtually finished.

Blizzard is grateful for Geoff’s many years of service to them and sends him their best wishes.
The impact Geoff had on the Warcraft and Overwatch teams will be felt for years to come. The following is the official statement that Blizzard provided to PC Gamer on Goodman’s departure: “We thank Geoff for his many years of service at Blizzard and wish him all the best. His ability to bring to life Overwatch’s diverse hero roster through gameplay has been incredible, and the mark he’s left on the Warcraft and Overwatch teams will be felt for years to come.”

Recent years have seen a lot of criticism around Blizzard. Blizzard has suffered greatly in the eyes of fans due to CEO Bobby Kotick’s reported maltreatment of employees, insider trading, and other workplace difficulties.

The following was said by a Blizzard spokesman regarding sets of accusations: “No court has ever found the allegations about the Company or Mr. Kotick to be true. The California DFEH filed its allegations without completing its investigation and failed to follow its investigative requirements and conciliation procedures. Our commitment has always been to a workplace that is inclusive and safe.”
