Real-time strategy game aficionados may find the gameplay of the eagerly anticipated sequel Homeworld 3, created by Blackbird Interactive, to be the most thrilling announcement from Gamescom Opening Night. The new cover system, user interface, combat, and Homeworld 3’s long-awaited release date are all highlighted in the Gamescom teaser. The PC version of Homeworld 3 will be available in the first half of 2023.
The game has release timeframe, which will be in the first half of 2023, is arguably one of the most significant details in the trailer. This is an especially substantial milestone for fans who have waited decades, as it has been more than 20 years since the previous space-based installment of the Homeworld franchise, Homeworld 2.
Before the release of Homeworld Remastered in 2016, Blackbird Interactive worked on the land-based precursor to the Homeworld series called Deserts of Kharak. As a sign that Homeworld 3 is staying true to its heritage, the new Gamescom Opening Night teaser opens with the new Mothership, Khar Khushan, leaving hyperspace in the same famous animation as previous Homeworld games.
Various ship types, including fighters, missile frigates, assault frigates, resource collectors, and adversary carriers, can be seen throughout the trailer. Expectedly, the graphics and user interface have improved significantly from previous Homeworld games.
While heavier ships explode spectacularly and leave behind chunks of wreckage, agile aircraft convincingly duel through space.
The most major addition coming to the Homeworld franchise is the inventive new cover system, which is demonstrated in the teaser. Particularly a large tunnel beneath the enemy’s missile frigates and a series of floating panels that give the player’s fighters protection from their missile barrages are cleverly placed cover elements that give players alternative paths to dodge foes and prepare ambushes.
To fully take advantage of the series’ unique verticality, Homeworld 3’s gameplay will highlight the careful usage of cover items. Resource gatherers, which can capture enemy ships if they can survive the approach, seem to have taken the position of marine frigates in previous games.
