Author and illustrator Naoya Matsumoto is best known for creating the Japanese manga series Kaiju No. 8, commonly referred to as Monster #8. For many years, Godzilla and other hideous creatures known as “kaijuu” roamed Japan. Every day, members of the defence corps, an elite military organisation, put their lives in danger to defend the public and fend off these animals. When a beast is destroyed, “sweepers,” or workers for Professional Kaijuu Cleaner, are left behind to clean it up.
Kafka Hibino, 32, is not happy with his street sweeping work. From an early age, he had the desire to enlist in the Defense Corps and eliminate Kaijuus in order to begin a new life. After a few unsuccessful tries, he gave up on his aspirations and chose the mediocrity of a respectable wage. When an enthusiastic 18-year-old coworker named Leno Ichikawa joins his team for cleanup, Kafka is reminded of his ambition to reenlist in the military.
Kafka meets a parasitic kaijuu who makes his way through his mouth and turns his body into the humanoid monster after a number of unpleasant incidents and interactions with the junior bird. Kafka wants to use his new skills to attempt his longtime goal one final time.
