What’s going on in Grantchester’s seventh season?
For those who are unfamiliar, Grantchester is a village-based mystery series about a detective and a priest who have forged an odd relationship in order to solve crimes. James Norton’s character collaborated with Robson Green for the first four seasons, but when he left the show, Will Davenport, the vicar played by Tom Brittney, continued their collaboration.
What does season 7 focus on?
Masterpiece PBS and ITV did disclose the following synopsis along with the news that season 7 started filming, which offered some enticing hints even if episode specifics have not yet been made public. It is detailed below.
The Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester is in the midst of wedding season when the series begins in the long, hot summer of 1959.
While the Reverend Will Davenport marries joyful couples in a religious ceremony, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating is as busy as ever looking into a number of murders that have occurred in the neighborhood. Everyone is wondering what the future holds as a new decade approaches, including Will. However, before the swinging fifties give way to the sixties, there are some crimes to investigate and decisions to be made that could permanently alter life in Grantchester.
The seventh season of Grantchester consists of six episodes:
In the first episode, Will and Geordie discover Lord Edmund Fitzgerald’s body and believe he was murdered, which puts them at odds with their new boss, DCI Elliot Wallace.

It appears that the core ensemble of Grantchester, including Tom Brittney’s Reverend Will Davenport and Robson Green’s DI Geordie Keating, will be back for the upcoming season, which is fantastic news for the show’s viewers. There have also been announcements of the return of other favorites including Tessa Peake-Jones (Mrs. Chapman), Al Weaver (Leonard Finch), Kacey Ainsworth (Cathy Keating), Oliver Dimsdale (Daniel Marlowe), and Nick Brimble (Jack Chapman).
Charlotte Ritchie, who is perhaps best known to British television viewers as Barbara from Call the Midwife, has been confirmed as a significant guest star for season 7. Photos featured in the Daily Mail show a significantly different appearance from the adored nurse she portrayed on Call the Midwife, including a wavy blonde haircut, however the specifics of her character have not yet been made public.
And while Tom Brittney will continue to solve crimes as Grantchester’s beloved vicar, he is now adding director to his list of accomplishments this season. He will direct episode three of the upcoming season specifically, giving fans another reason to be enthusiastic.
In a statement, Brittney said, “I’m excited to be back on set with my Grantchester family and back in our happy spot.” The opportunity to direct one episode of this series has been a lifelong goal of mine, and I can’t wait for the audience to watch it (and for the day when I can finally order Robson about!).
Who Will Return for Grantchester Season 7?
As DI Geordie Keating and Reverend Will Davenport, respectively, Tom Brittney and Geordie Keating are back, which is not surprising. In addition to them, Tessa Peake-Mrs. Jones’s Chapman, Nick Brimble’s Jack Chapman, Kacey Ainsworth’s Cathy Keating, Oliver Dimsdale’s Daniel Marlowe, and Leonard Finch return (Al Weaver).

The Grantchester Mysteries, a series of six volumes of short stories by James Runcie, is a good alternative if the wait for season seven feels too long to satisfy your need for more vicarly investigation. The primary character of Grantchester during the first four seasons (played by James Norton) before Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) was introduced, Sidney Chambers, is the subject of the books. Runcie’s father, former Canterbury Archbishop Robert Runcie, served as some of the books’ inspiration.
Will Grantchester return for an eighth season?
The official response as of this writing is “maybe.” It does seem improbable that they would discontinue such a popular program, especially following season 7’s cliffhanger ending, as Robson Green recently indicated that discussions are going place.
If it happens, they’ll probably start shooting this summer or this fall. Hopefully, this indicates that additional information will be available soon.
Seasons 1-6 of Grantchester are available on Amazon.
James Runcie’s Grantchester novels served as the inspiration for the Grantchester television series. The books, which were based on Runcie’s own father, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, recount the tale of a vicar who investigates crimes in Cambridgeshire, England, just like the television program does.
