Stranger Things 4, the fourth season of the American science fiction horror drama television series Stranger Things, was published in two volumes exclusively on Netflix’s streaming service, the first on May 27, 2022, and the second five weeks later on July 1, 2022. One of the plot’s “broad strokes,” according to Matt Duffer, is the main centre of action being transferred out of Hawkins, Indiana, for the bulk of the season, which is a series first. He also hinted that the various loose ends left by season three’s conclusion, such as Hopper’s presumed death and Eleven being adopted by Joyce Byers and migrating with her new family out of state, will be addressed in the fourth season.
The Duffers then elaborated on their prior remarks, claiming that the fourth season’s “epic” triptych format was one of the key contributors to its inflated length. In terms of sheer scope, length, and a fresh, more mature tonal change, they compared it to HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Thousands of visual effect shots were commissioned and created over the two-year production and post-production processes due to the season’s duration. However, similar to how the first season was made, the Duffers preferred to depend more on actual effects than computer-generated ones.
For example, the Upside Down’s main menace this season, a humanoid entity known as Vecna, was “90 percent practical,” which the Duffers discovered produced a greater presence on set for the actors to respond to than a prop for subsequent computer-generated effects. The appearance for Vecna and the other creatures was created by Barrie Gower, a make-up artist who had previously worked on Game of Thrones and Chernobyl. Vecna was based on the same-named Dungeons & Dragons villain, albeit the two characters are not related.
