Given Warner Bros.’s recent merger with Discovery, nothing is known about what the future holds for some of the DC films. However, a recent profile on actress Jurnee Smollett in the New York Times seems to imply that her black canary film is still in the works.
Smollett was set to reprise her role in the highly awaited picture, which was mentioned briefly in a recent feature. The black canary is a character in the upcoming film Predator Birds, which will be released in 2020.
The New York Times also spoke with Misha Green (Lovecraft Country), who creates black canary films and lauded Smollett’s on-set demeanor. Greene noted, “Jernie shows up that day with probably 900 different ways to approach her character.” Since Discovery purchased Warner Bros., the movie Status Black Canary has been in the works.
Discovery was widely reported to be assessing the DC Films section at the time of the transition, which had already resulted in some delays and cancellations. Wonder Twins, a film that was canceled earlier this month, is included.
Even though Predator birds were released to a lot of hooplas, the picture didn’t do well at the box office, therefore it’s presently uncertain if Discovery is willing to pursue future projects. At the very least, it appears that the film Black Canary is still in the works.

The future of the DC Films universe looks to be shifting regularly, and fans are curious to watch which characters are highlighted in which ways. Dinah Lance / Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett), who originally appeared in 2020’s Birds of Prey, is one among them (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Fans have been campaigning to see Dinah onscreen again since the premiere of Birds of Prey, and there’s a chance they’ll get their wish soon.
Last year, it was revealed that a Black Canary HBO Max film is in the works, with Smollett returning to the part and Misha Green, her regular Lovecraft Country, and Underground colleague, penning the story. A binder covered in the character’s emblem was discovered in the background of one of Green’s most recent Instagram stories, providing the first hint concerning Black Canary’s status in some months. Green responded to the fan who created the artwork on the cover of her binder on Twitter, saying that it helps her set “the vibe [she’s] looking for every time [she] goes to write.”
While it’s unclear what this signifies in terms of the Black Canary film’s status, it does appear to imply that work is being done on the project secretly. There’s also a potential we’ll see Smollett’s Dinah onscreen again before the film’s release, according to reports, with a series of Easter eggs and theories pointing to her being addressed in the next Batgirl picture.
“It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Black Canary. It’s a dream come true, character, and it was a dream come true to play her “In a 2020 interview, Smollett explained. “I would do it in a heartbeat if [the] dynamics fell properly, because Lord knows, I follow Misha wherever she leads me.”
“You can’t help but envision it a little bit,” Green continued, “like, ‘What would I do with a Black Canary show?'” “I’m sure it’d be thrilling.”
As it turns out, the two met while playing the hit video game Injustice 2 and became friends over Black Canary.

“And I’d just perform the ‘canary scream’ to win all the time,” Green continued, “which would irritate [Jurnee].” “It’s kind of kismet and amusing that you’re now Black Canary because I was playing that character to beat you in this game,” she says.
