This afternoon, Google published Android 13 Beta 3.3 (that’s a lot of threes), which brings a long list of bug patches to the disgruntled beta testers who have toiled over the past few weeks. Even though we’ll have to wait till Beta 4 is released next month, today’s launch does have one well-known custom for any new software update: the Android Easter egg. Although it might not feel as exciting as it did in years past, anyone running Beta 3.3 can give it a try right now.
Anyone using their handset to participate in the beta program can participate in Android’s yearly Easter egg event. In prior years, we’ve seen everything from cat minigames (twice!) to Flappy Bird clones. The Easter egg for Android 12 offered a paint chip widget in addition to celebrating Google’s successes with Material You, which was a touch less thrilling. Our first look at this year’s well-kept secret feels incredibly similar as the official release of Android 13 draws closer.
The newest Easter egg is a reimagining of the clock-based puzzle from the previous year with an emphasis on emojis, as noticed by 9to5Google. Like always, go to Settings > About and quickly tap on the version number to bring up Google’s secret splash screen. Just set the timer to 1:00—or 1300 in military time—and before you know it, you’ll be staring at a secret that is quite identical to the one from the previous year, but with “13” in place of “12.”
Of course, there is something novel about this, which Mishaal Rahman of Esper.io very skillfully emphasized. Long-pressing the bubbles causes them to transform into various emojis, such as smileys, hearts, flowers, and clocks. Although I’m not exactly sure how it symbolizes Android 13’s focus on privacy and security, it’s a cute little spin on last year’s design. Perhaps Beta 4 will include a surprising number of emoji-related additions, or perhaps Google has simply run out of Easter eggs to indicate lesser updates.
