The Pixel 6a Has Been Approved by the Fcc in Four Different Configurations.

According to Droid-Life, Google’s next midrange phone, the Pixel 6a, has been spotted at the FCC.

The listing’s timeliness is the most shocking aspect. The Pixel 6a’s FCC acceptance in April is the earliest we’ve seen for the A series in a long time. The Pixel 5a was approved by the FCC in July 2021 and released a month later in August, while the Pixel 4a was approved in June 2020 and released in August as well.

The Pixel 3a, the first Pixel A phone, was FCC-listed in February and debuted at Google I/O in May. This year, Google’s (virtual) I/O event is scheduled for May 11, 2022, thus that date is presently the odds-on favorite for the phone’s release date.

At the FCC, there are four distinct versions, with just one unit supporting mmWave. Because carriers haven’t pushed out mmWave to many regions, it adds $50-$100 to the price of a phone and has essentially no real-world application. Given the exorbitant price of mmWave, we’d rather save the money.

The mention of four US versions also suggests a broad launch, with the phone perhaps landing on many major carriers. Hopefully, this will lead to increased international support. The Pixel 5a is exclusively available in the United States and Japan, owing to a global chip scarcity.

The diversity of versions listed might signal that Google has resolved its stock concerns and can return to the more typical 13-country Pixel launch.

We already have a lot of information on the Pixel 6a. The design was revealed in November, and it showed Google carrying over the fantastic Pixel 6 design into the intermediate variant.

The Pixel 6’s distinctive camera bar holds the cameras while also serving as a strong foundation to place on a table, preventing the unstable wobbliness that comes with an off-center camera bump. This will be the first Pixel A phone featuring an in-screen fingerprint reader, a significant departure from prior versions’ back capacitive fingerprint readers.

The Pixel 6 is the first phone to come with a Google-made SoC, the Tensor, and a November rumor from 9to5Google said that the Pixel 6a will also use a Tensor processor. A Geekbench entry for a Pixel 6a appeared in March, revealing a Google Tensor SoC and 6GB of RAM.

The score and frequencies are identical to those of the more costly Pixel 6, indicating that it uses the same Tensor processor, which would result in a really competitive mid-range phone.

We’re only looking at stats, but the Pixel 6a appears to be a small powerhouse of a phone, and it may even persuade folks to reconsider purchasing the flagship Pixel 6. The Pixel 6a’s sole significant “downgrade” is its lower 6.2-inch screen size when compared to the Pixel 6’s 90 Hz, 6.4-inch screen and the Pixel 6 Pro’s 120 Hz, 6.7-inch screen.

If the Pixel 6a display has a refresh rate of 60 Hz (the exact rate is unknown at the present), it may be a big determining factor.

The camera system is also downgraded, with only two sensors and the main camera apparently being the tried-and-true 12.2-megapixel Sony IMX363, which was the primary camera on the Pixel 2, 3, 4, and 5. However, it should still be a fantastic camera.

If you’re looking for a no-frills Android phone, the Pixel A series is a great option. Google may have another winner on its hands if the price is right.
