What is a PWM PC fan?

There is an additional wire for pulse width modulation (PWM) in DC fans. When a fourth wire is used to control the fan motor, it is known as a PWM (pulse width modulation). The PWM fan’s control input is provided via a PWM signal. Typically, the control input is an open-drain or open-collector output connected to a 5 V or 3.3 V pull-up voltage.

Exactly what is a PC fan splitter used for?

The motherboard may still tell the fans to speed up if necessary, but now it will do it simultaneously for both of them. You could (particularly if the fan curves were custom-set) provide different commands to various fans based on the current situation if you had several connections.

Can a splitter be used to control fans?

That fan splitter will not allow you to change the fan speed. Rather than using the motherboard’s power supply, the power is coming from the PSU through a Molex connection.

When using a splitter, does PWM work?

From a single motherboard fan header, Gelid’s 1-to-4 PWM Fan Splitter allows you to connect up to four fans.

Does my PC require a fan splitter?

A splitter is not necessary. Your motherboard may not be able to handle 5 fans on a single fan header, especially if two of them are LED. Instead, use MOLEX connectors to connect the fans directly to the power supply. A fan controller is an option as well.
