Locke and Key have been hunting for a home as a project for a long time before it debuted on Netflix in early 2020.

And, while it took a long time to get to Netflix—more on that below—nice it’s to know that it finally has a secure and loving home where it can develop as a series from season to season. Locke and Key Season 3 was picked up last December, long before Season 2 ever aired, so you know it’s popular.
The program was scheduled as a series on Fox TV at one time, and a pilot was ever produced, but it wasn’t picked up.
It was based on a comic book by famed horror writer Joe Hill—son of Stephen King, ever heard of him?—and it was planned as a series on Fox TV at one point, but it wasn’t picked up. Then it was decided to make it into a trilogy. Neither of these things happened.
The show’s ideas were revived a few years later, with Hulu as the network and director Scott Derrickson (Sinister) on board. Andy Muschietti, the director of It, was later replaced by Derrickson, who filmed a pilot that was also canceled.
The program eventually went to Netflix and became the Locke and Key we know today; Muschietti is still involved as a producer, lending his horror credentials to the production.
And this is great news for Locke and Key fans because it appears like Netflix is committed to ensuring the show’s success and ability to deliver the tale it wants to tell. Hill’s comic ran for 37 issues in its first run, with five additional issues following in what he dubbed “The Golden Age.”
All of this is to imply that there’s a lot more Locke and Key in the works. Here’s everything else we know about the upcoming Season 3 of the program.
Will Locke and Key return for Season 3?
Yes. Locke and Key got renewed for a third season in December 2020. “[Producer] Carlton [Cuse and [showrunner] Meredith Averill have created a wonderful universe in Locke and Key, and we’re delighted to see the Lockes return for more in the third season,” said Brian Wright, Netflix’s VP of Overall Deals, at the time.
Season 2 took a little more than a year and a half to arrive following the release of Locke and Key Season 1, but that was due to the whole Covid-19 incident, as you may have heard. Season 3 is already finished filming and in the can, so we expect it to be released much sooner.
What’s your best guess based on a stab in the dark? Summer of 2022, late spring or early summer.
Season 3 should see the whole cast from Season 2 return.

Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), Nina (Darby Stanchfield), Duncan (Aaron Ashmore), Scot (Petrice Jones), Josh (Brendan Hines), and Frederick Gideon (Kevin Durand) should all be involved in Joe Hill’s universe.
