Julia Roberts has been involved in numerous memorable romantic comedies, but ahead of her latest film, she is opening up about why it’s taken 20 years for the actress to do another one.
“People sometimes misconstrue that I haven’t done a romance movie because they think my career isn’t fun,” said Julia during an interview with The New York Times.”If somebody came at me script-wise or directorially thinking this will be like My Best Friend’s Wedding again – which was very lighthearted–I’m down.”
I was lucky enough to star in Ticket To Paradise with one of my all-time favorite actors, George Clooney. He felt that only worked best if I played his love interest so off we went!
When asked if it was easy to return as a romantic lead, Roberts agreed that playing in the “sandbox” again had been great given how long she’s been away from these roles. She loves making people laugh and having fun with what they say but admitted there is something special about being taken seriously too—especially when you’re clever!

Despite finding no “good enough” rom-com scripts before, Roberts explained that the bar was also raised even more as her three children grew up. She said this extra responsibility made it challenging to find time for herself and think about doing something creative without feeling guilty over neglecting anyone else in favor of career ambitions or other distractions like shopping (which she loves).
Pursuing your dreams can be hard — but if you’re lucky enough to have family who will support what you want to then go ahead!
She added, “For so much of my children’s younger life they would see their dad go off and I would work a little but as time goes on we all want something different from our lives. My daughter in particular has seen me spending more quality moments with creative projects than she does at home; this is because it’s important to show your kids that there are many ways you can be successful outside the traditional 9-5 job path.”
When Roberts realized that filming would start at the same time her youngest son started kindergarten, she almost skipped out on August: Osage County. “How could I miss this?” said Roberts while remembering Danny Moder’s advice about how they needed to leave eventually and not miss any more school or family events for work. It turned into such an opportunity though because after their first day of shooting together everything clicked between herself as well other cast members who became friends over screen space
When asked about the tough moments in life where you need to be pushed, Roberts commended her husband for being an encouragement. “He would have said something like: ‘I don’t know,” she shared with laughter before adding; as women, we often feel compelled and pressured by our Hearts–to do what’s best despite any fears or doubts.”
As for rumors that her smile was insured, Roberts debunks the speculation by stating “What am I insuring it against? How would you do that?” She goes on to explain how there is someone at home every night making sure they floss correctly because if their teeth were covered with insurance then maybe this person wouldn’t need to be so attentive.
