On Friday night, Lee Daniels and Mo’Nique showed that they’ve moved on from their long-running dispute by attending a New York comedy event hosted by his Precious co-star and announcing their impending collaboration on the Netflix film Demon House.
“I’m truly sorry if I offended you in any way. Daniels told the Staten audience at Mo’Nique’s event, “Mo’Nique and Friends: April Fools Day with The Queen of Comedy,” that she was “my best buddy—my best friend.” “You think Precious was just… That was God at work in both of us. And we’re f***ing going to do it again!”
Daniels then told Mo’Nique that he loves her, and Mo’Nique confirmed that he feels the same way.
While Daniels and Mo’Nique worked together on the 2009 movie Precious, with the latter winning an Oscar for her performance as the main character’s abusive mother, the two did not interact for the next 13 years. Mo’Nique publicly claimed that Daniels, Oprah Winfrey, and Tyler Perry had blackballed her for declining to promote the picture during awards season, which sparked the conflict. She claimed at the time that it wasn’t in her contract, and she simply didn’t want to waste time detached from her loved ones.
Though Daniels and his Precious co-producers refuted Mo’Nique’s claim, the actress and comedian is set to reunite with him on Demon House, as we originally reported, with Mo’Nique taking up the role once played by Octavia Spencer. She’ll play a social worker who assists a family through a series of exorcisms alongside Andra Day, Glenn Close, Rob Morgan, Caleb McLaughlin, and Aunjanue Ellis.
The future project will be produced by Daniels, Tucker Tooley, Pam Williams, Todd Crites, and Jackson Nguyen, formally burying the hatchet between Daniels and Mo’Nique, with Greg Renner and Gregoire Gensollen exec producing. In June, filming will begin.
